I sat in my office, staring at Caleb, who was fidgeting anxiously in the seat across from me. It wasn’t like him to be this shaken. The stiffness in his shoulders, the darting of his eyes—these were signs I’d seen before in people who had faced something they couldn’t explain or forget, for that matter. I kept my expression neutral, but every instinct told me that whatever he had seen had rattled him deeply. The kid had clearly witnessed something beyond him. My own unease grew even worse with every passing second as I leaned forward, trying to coax out his story.
“Caleb, you’re safe here,” I reassured him, keeping my tone as low and calm as I could to back up my words. “Whatever you saw can’t get to you here. You don’t have to be scared. Tell me what you saw.”
