CHAPTER ONE: Take A Picture If You Must. You Seem Amazed By Me
"Heaven! What's taking you so long? Hurry up and pack all the necessary things you need. We have a long way ahead of us, Missy!" Dad said impatiently aloud. And I swear the whole town could hear him. Well, lucky for us, houses here aren't that close to each other.
"Wait! I'll be there in a sec, Dad." I answered aloud to compete with his loud voice. I pulled the handle of my trolley and I saw my newest vampire book on my dresser, "Oops! Better not leave this." I picked it up and stuffed it inside my backpack.
I pulled my trolley and went downstairs to see Dad standing on the foot of the stairs with hands on his waist.
"Yeah. Yeah. I know. I'm always late..." I said while tilting my head to the side and smiled playfully. I kissed Dad on the cheeks. "I love you, Dad." I giggled.
"I'll be in the car. Talk to your Mom." he shook his head on my gesture and began walking out of the house.
I rushed my way to the kitchen and found my Mom sitting on the kitchen counter stool. She looks so down and at the same time, troubled.
"Hey Mom. Are you okay?" I asked worried. It's not every day I get to see Mom's upset face. Something's happened. Or was about to happen. Is this about their job?
She turned to face me and a forced smile was carved on her lips. I can tell it's not one of her most beautiful smiles. Mom's smiles were always so beautiful.
"Heather, I'm sorry we had to do this. I'm sorry we kept on doing this." she said downheartedly and held my hand tightly.
"It is okay, Mom. I understand. Duty calls, right?" I gave her a hug.
"We can't give you a normal teenage life. And we don't intend to do this on purpose, sweetie. This is...our job's nature. We're truly sorry." Mom said apologetically. And I know any minute now, she'll cry. I hate seeing my Mom crying.
"Hey Mom. It's okay. Really. I don't care if this isn't as normal as it seems. I'm just glad and happy I have awesome parents who love me when someone out there doesn't have any. I'm thankful you're here. And I'll remain thankful for the rest of my life." I said happily. "I love you, Mom. You and Dad."
"I love you too, sweetie." Mom replied.
What are we talking about? Well... Like what Mom said, we're not living a normal life. We move a lot. My Dad and Mom's job was really unpredictable and dangerous. They're Secret Agents. Well that's what they told me.
And so, right now, I had to transfer school. I was kind of hoping that this will be my last school hop. Since I'll be in Senior High. And soon to be on college.
We move a lot. Country to country. State to state. City to city. We're like travellers who can't settle in just one place. Well, I'm used to it already. And I can't say that this is normal for me because it is not, really. But I have no other choice but to live up to this. Better yet, I know my Mom and Dad loves me a lot.
Yes I school-hopped for like since I was born. But something's changed. Because for the first time, I'll be staying at a Boarding School. At Brooklyn Heights High School. One of the prestigious and known schools in Hampburg City. It'll be a few miles away from Dashford. So we've got to hit the road.
"Heather... Come here." Mommy snapped me out of my train of thoughts.
I walked closer to her. And the next thing I knew, a cold metal was on my neck. I held it to see a red circular pendant.
"What's this, Mom?" I asked curiously as I inspected the red pendant of the necklace.
"That's a family heritage. It is passed on to generations. I wore that once and now I'm giving it to you." Mommy said smiling.
"It's beautiful, Mom. Thanks." I smiled at her.
I heard a loud honking sound, must be Dad. I forgot, he's a huge impatient good-looking man. Hey Dad, I just praised you so stop with the incessant horns! Haha.
"Uhm. Mom, I gotta go. Dad's probably furious." I grinned and gave her a kiss.
"You take care, Heather. Okay? Call me when something came up." Mom said.
"I will." I smiled and started walking.
"Heather..." Mommy called me out. "Always wear that necklace wherever you go. Don't take it off, okay?" Mom said. I can see worry on her face.
"I won't, Mom. Gotta go." I waved my hand and dashed through the door.
***
"Are you sure you'll be okay from here?" Dad asked after we took out my things from the trunk.
"I'll take it from here, Dad." I replied.
"Take care, okay? Don't roam around at night. Stay inside your room. You're new here." Dad reminded.
"Dad, I'm a grown-up girl. No need to worry. I'll give you a call if something bad happens." I said with an assuring smile.
"I hope that won't happen." and then he hugged me. "I love you, Heaven."
"I love you too, Dad." I responded.
"Okay. Off you go, Lady." he shooed me and I just grinned.
I pulled the handle of my trolley up and started walking towards the gigantic black gate of Brooklyn Heights.
I heard the horn of my Dad's car, I spun to face it and saw the car slowly making its way far from me. When I can no longer see the car, I spun to face the big black gate.
Okay, Heaven. This is it. This is not your first time to school-hop. You've done this a million times—screw that! I've just done this thrice! Phew! Why am I nervous?
I took a deep breath before walking towards the guardhouse.
"Excuse me..." I said softly.
"Yes? What can I do for you, Ma'am?" he asked formally.
"U-Uhm... This is Brooklyn Heights, right?" I asked shyly. Well, you can't blame me. I know I did a lot of school-hoppings but this is something new! I am going to a Boarding School for the record.
"You're in the right place, Ma'am. Might I ask, are you a transfer here?" he asked. I can tell he's nice.
"Yes, I am." I answered.
"Oh. Well... If that's the case, welcome to Brooklyn Heights High School." he said and gave me a sweet smile.
"Thank you, Sir." I said politely and smiled at him.
And just like that, the humongous black gate swung open. I walked towards it while pulling my trolley.
"One more thing, don't go to Dark Woods alone, Ma'am. It's quite dangerous in there." he reminded. I just nodded before officially walking inside the borders that separate reality from fantasy. Because I swear, this place is awesome! I probably am looking rather awe-struck right now. This place is ten times or more like a hundred times bigger than I thought it could be. Trees are everywhere giving off shades for students to read books and relax. Well-placed and planted flowers. A red bricked-pavement that leads to various directions. There was a huge field on the far right, where students are playing soccer. There are factions of boys and girls everywhere. And what shocked me most was the big white building that I reckon was where classes take place. It's so big and was designed creatively. This is far more beautiful than my previous schools. Those don't even come close to this.
"Hell yeah." was all I can manage to mutter. I was even surprised myself for being able to say those three words.
"Are you calling my name?" said someone out of the blue and pulling me out from my trance.
I searched for someone who could possibly close enough to hear what I just said. And there, in a tree, on my right, stood a guy who's leaning on the tree's trunk.
He was wearing a black leather jacket. Maroon inner shirt. Black pants and black shoes. Everything in him is almost black.
I looked behind me and was kinda hoping someone was there and that almost-all- black guy's talking to him or her. But no one is there so I believe he really is talking to me.
"I reckon you're new." said his deep voice again.
"Y-Yeah... And what do you mean by calling your name? Because I know for sure, I don't know you." I said seriously. What's he talking about? I am positive that those three words don't resemble a name. His name couldn't possibly be 'Hell' or 'Yeah', right? His Mom might've hated giving birth to him so she named him Hell. Tragic.
"You mentioned 'Hell'. That's my name." he said as he walked towards me.
I can see his face now. And whoa! He's just drop-dead gorgeous! I mean... s**t! R.I.P ovaries! I thought a guy, this handsome, only exists on books. Like, you know, those fictional characters writers create to capture our thirsty for love hearts. But right now, a gorgeous-looking guy is standing in front of me and makes me drool over him. Gorgeous-looking was really an understatement. Because... s**t. I can't find the right adjective.
He has dark brown hair. Thick brows which make him even look hotter! Oh my Gosh! I can't believe I am really praising his appearance! Unmistakably, everything in him is black. As well as those pretty black eyes that can go endless.
"Take a picture if you must. You seem amazed by me." he said coolly as he tucked his hands on his jacket pocket.
I blinked a few times and came back to my senses. Oh my gosh! I really did drool over him. I felt a feverish rush on my cheeks. Oh My God! This is embarrassing!
What are you doing, Heaven? Don't flirt around. Get to your dorm, now.
Yeah yeah. The dorm.
"I better get going. Gotta find my dorm room." and I hurriedly pulled my trolley and walk pass him.
But I stopped right on my tracks when a realization dawned me.
I DON'T FREAKING KNOW WHERE MY DORM IS!
What are the odds?
"I know where it is." I jolted up upon hearing his voice again.
"What the—"
"Mention my name again." he said then smirked. What's with this guy? He just kept on popping out of nowhere.
"—fudge! I wasn't going to mention your freaking name." I said and glared at him. "Just where is that freaking dorm." I said in almost a whisper.
"I said I know where the Girl's Dormhouses are." he repeated.
At that distance, he heard me? Keen ears.
"Fine. If you insist that you know, take me there." I said while raising a brow and pulled my trolley again. When I notice he's not following me, I spun to face him.
"What are you waiting for? Take me there." I said in full irritation.
"I said I know where it is. I wasn't planning on taking you there. And besides you're old enough. You can find it. See you around, new girl." he finished off with a devious smirk and left me heating up.
Oh will you look at that. He's not just handsome but rude too, big time. Well, I don't need his help anyways. I'm a grown-up girl and I know I can find that freaking dorm in no time.
I proceeded to the white building and I just thought there's a map of the school on the lobby.
Smart girl, Heaven. Smart girl.
As I stepped inside the building, I immediately looked for a piece of paper or something that resembles a map. And there. I found it. Framed on a wall. It's not that hard to find, really.
"Found it! Ha! Who said I need his help. Baaah!" I said proudly.
"So, it's just right at the back of this huge building, eh? Easy cheesy!" I said to myself and began walking my way to the dormhouses.
While on my little journey to find my dorm, I suddenly felt like I'm being watched. You know that certain uneasiness. I turned around and I think I just saw a shadow movement. That gave chills to my spine. And so I sprinted my way to Dormhouse #16.
When I finally saw it, I rushed towards it and began knocking. After a few knocks, the door swung open revealing a girl, who's probably my age. She has dark brown hair and has a Latina or Brazilian feature on her face.
"You must be, Heather." she said gleefully. And a smile is plastered on her face.
"Actually, I prefer Heaven. Call me Heaven, please." I said and smiled back at her.
"Cool name. Come in." she widened the door for me and I stepped in.
And yes, by the name of it, this is really a house. What the—fudge!
"Cool huh. That was my first reaction, too. I mean look at this place. It has a kitchen. Living room with a flatscreen TV. Dining room. And a fireplace." she said as I started to look around the place. It's cozy and at the same time, classy. I like it.
"Fireplace?" I asked curiously.
"Believe me, I am bothered too by this fireplace at first, but during mid October till December, this place is actually freezing. And so the fireplace was really a brilliant idea, rather than having heaters. And oh! By the way, I'm Errine. Errine Forbes." She offered her hand. And I took it.
"I'm Heather. Heather Venice Wessler." I responded.
"We're roomies!" she giggled. "Oh! I'll take you to our bedrooms. You won't believe how big each of it was." she giggled excitedly.
"Okay." was all I can manage to come up with. I can't seem to reach the level of excitement she have.
"Oh! Let me help you with that." she said happily as she took my trolley and lifted it upon taking the stairs. Yes. This is a two-storey house. Gosh! I couldn't even imagine how much my parents paid for all of this.
Upon taking one final step, I was bewildered. The second floor was specifically made for our bedrooms! My gosh! It has comfort rooms in each room. Air-conditioned. Built-in closet. And a small balcony! This place might cost hundreds of thousands!
"So pick a room between the two unoccupied. The purple's mine. Hihi." she giggled.
"Why are there 2 extra rooms?" Now that she mentioned it, I was curious why there are two extra rooms.
"Jillian's not here anymore. She graduated last year. And the other one... was... was Selene's... She... She died last year." her voice was merely a whisper on the last part.
"Oh.. I'm sorry to hear that. That's tragic. So which one of this was her room?" I asked. Well, if I'm being honest, I don't wanna use her room. Creepy.
"The yellow one." she replied. The yellow one's on the far end of the second floor. So that leaves me the pink one. The middle room. Nice. Pink! Girly.
"I'll take the pink one then." I said hurriedly. Phew.
She handed me the handle of my trolley. Then smiled.
"I'll be downstairs if you need me. I'll be preparing something for you. Consider that, my welcome party." and she closed the door. I can hear her distant humming. I just shook my head.
