Makayla stared into the darkness where Gino had disappeared, her heart pounding so hard it echoed in her ears. He had remembered her. For just a moment, just a flicker of time—he had fought against whatever was changing him. That meant something. That had to mean something. Makayla turned sharply to Mikhail. “We have to go after him.” Mikhail ran a hand through his hair, exhaling heavily. He didn’t look at her. “Makayla—” “I know what you’re going to say,” she cut in. “But you saw him, Mikhail. He was fighting it. He knew me.” Mikhail let out a sharp laugh, but there was no humor in it. “Yeah? And then he nearly killed you.” Makayla flinched. Mikhail’s golden eyes burned with frustration. “How many times do I have to tell you? He’s not Dad anymore.” Makayla clenched her jaw.
