The bodies were already cooling, their blood dark against the forest floor, but Mikhail didn’t look at them for long. His focus was already shifting. Three men. Just three. It was laughable that Gino would send such a small group if he were truly trying to get rid of them. Makayla knew it too. She crouched beside one of the fallen, wiping the edge of her blade clean on his shirt before rolling him onto his back. Her golden eyes narrowed as she studied him. “They weren’t scouts,” she murmured. “They came to kill.” Mikhail nodded. “And they failed.” She hummed, considering. “Maybe that was the point.” His gaze snapped to hers. She continued, dragging a hand through her tangled hair. “Gino knows we wouldn’t go down this easy. He knows we’re stronger than this.” She motioned to the bodies
