Chapter 2

The morning sun cast a warm glow over the city of Miami as I made my way to the Salvador Mansion. My heart raced with a mixture of excitement and nervousness, knowing that this interview could potentially change the course of my life. I had meticulously prepared for this moment, practicing my responses to possible questions and imagining what it would be like to work in such a grand and imposing mansion. I was lost in thoughts that I didn’t even hear a car honking, the loud honk from the car startled me, leaving me frightened and disoriented amidst the chaos. I stood frozen in place. Hey! You came out of nowhere like a bat out of hell! Watch where you're going!" the guy in the car bellowed. "Watch where you're driving, you reckless maniac! This is a crosswalk, and pedestrians have the right of way!" I retorted, my voice seething with anger. "I don't have time for this! Get out of my way, you filth!" he shouted once more and sped up and left the scene. I clenched my fist, my anger boiling over. "You're the one who needs to learn some manners! Money can't buy common sense!" I shot back, my words dripping with fury. I sighed and walked away trying to calm myself down determined that no stranger will ruin my day. As I walked up to the large gates of the Salvador Mansion, my footsteps made loud sounds in the quiet morning. The mansion was a sign of wealth, with its clean white outside and perfectly kept gardens. This was very different from the simple neighbourhood where I grew up. The mansion looked fancy compared to the area around it. I felt nervous as my footsteps echoed while I walked toward the big house, hoping the interview would go well. I got to the gate, and knocked on it gently, the security man came out and looked at with curiosity and suspicion. “There is a bell over there” he pointed at a small switch by the side of the single entrance. I was shocked that I didn’t notice the bell.” I am sorry sir”, I didn’t notice it I responded. What do you want here he further queried? “I am here for an interview” I said. He used his radio to tell someone in the mansion that I had arrived. A few moments later, the large iron gates made a creaking sound as they opened, allowing me to enter the big property with many buildings and gardens. The Mansion itself was a marvel of architecture and extravagance. Tall pillars flanked the entrance, and a grand staircase led up to the imposing double doors. As I stepped inside, the opulence of the interior took my breath away. The main living room of the mansion was spacious and luxurious, with high ceilings and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The walls were painted in a soft cream colour, adorned with paintings and portraits of the mansion's owners and their ancestors. The floor was covered with a thick carpet that added warmth and comfort to the room. The furniture was elegant and cozy, with sofas, armchairs, coffee tables, and a fireplace that created a welcoming atmosphere. The room also had a grand piano, a bookcase, and a chandelier that added some sophistication and charm to the space. I was greeted by a housemaid. “Hello my name is Martha” she said, I will inform madam of your arrival right away. Thank you! I echoed. As I waited nervously, I couldn't help but wonder about the person who had summoned me here. What kind of luxury is this? What expectations would they have of a cook from a humble background like mine. A few minutes later I heard the clocking of heels on the floor from the staircase. The Madam descended the stairs with grace and poise, wearing a simple yet elegant black dress that flattered her figure. Her hair was styled in a neat bun, with a few strands framing her face. Her makeup was subtle and natural, enhancing her features. She wore a pair of pearl earrings and a matching necklace, adding some sophistication and charm to her look. I immediately stood up and greeted the madam, "Good morning, Madam," I said. "You are welcome," she replied. "I do not have much time to waste." "Martha," she called, and like a flash, Martha appeared. "Take Amelia to the kitchen; I want to see what she does with her hands." Martha led me through a maze of corridors and into a spacious kitchen that could easily accommodate a small army of chefs. The kitchen was a chef's dream, equipped with state-of-the-art appliances and an array of ingredients that would make any culinary enthusiast swoon. You can start now Martha said, “if you need anything ask the assistant chefs.” she added. Thank you! I replied. I thought to make one of my best selling meals at the site. Yes, my steamed potatoes and grilled fish of course! I washed sliced diced and sautéed the potatoes, placed them in a steamer, and steamed, I seasoned the fish and grilled it too. All the while I sought the assistant chefs help because I couldn’t use most of the kitchen equipment. In exactly 40 minutes I was all done. I carefully platted the dish in the platters the assistant chefs provided and made my way to the dining area with led by Martha. Madam was already seated at the dining table awaiting the meal. I brought the meal to the dining table and served her a portion. She took a fork in her left hand from the tray where the platter had been placed and helped herself to some of the meal. I watched her closely for any change in her facial expression or reaction. After her first bite, she served herself several more portions with the fork, then remarked "This is quite good. My heart swelled with excitement, and I couldn't help but smile. 'Thank you, Madam,' I said. 'You're hired,' the Madam added. I was swept away by excitement; I couldn't believe I had just been hired to cook here. 'Thank you, Madam,' I said several times. 'Martha, fill her in on the details,' the Madam said as she made her way to the staircase and ascended upstairs. Martha showed me around the house and the workers' quarters where I would be staying. Workers of the mansion live here and only get to leave when they are on leave, accepting visitors only twice a month. I didn't mind the conditions; I was completely blown away when she told me my salary. She said I could go home and get my things. I made for the gate immediately, which was opened by the security man. I waved to him as I ran down the streets; I couldn't wait to share the news with my Father and Tessa."
