Chapter 10.

1393 Words
Shannon’s POV. The drive to the sheriff’s office is silent. I don’t want to think about everything that has happened, because it has happened so fast. It was only three days ago that my world imploded. Not from what Dan did but from the call from Bear. I always thought my father was invincible and Shane, as annoying as he is, was, he would have been just like dad. Now they are both gone with a woman I never got the opportunity to meet and now I’m here left to look after Shane and Lily’s beautiful baby girls. “Shan, we’re here.” Stinger says and I gulp down the knot in my throat and look out the windshield and he is right. We are here. “You are not doing this alone, sweetheart. We are all beside you. One day at a time.” Stinger says before he hugs me and I hug him back. “Thanks, Matt, I never thought this would ever happen. My family must have killed a powerful god or something in past lives for this s**t to keep happening to us.” I mumble into his shoulder and he sighs. “I don’t think that is it, sweetheart, but we will find who did this and find out why. Just take each day as it comes and remember you are not doing this alone, not anymore.” Matt says, and I slowly nod my head and move back, taking a calming breath as I look at the building outside the windshield. “Ok Stinger, let’s do this.” I say and open the door and step out. I look down Main Street and I smile. It hasn’t really changed in four years. I remember riding my motorbike down the street with Shane and my dad beside me as I gained more confidence. Then again, I was riding from when I was Chance’s age. I don’t think I can do this. I know if I do this, then it means that it is all true that they are truly gone and not coming back. Stinger places a comforting hand on my shoulder and offers me a sad smile and I take another deep breath and walk towards the doors of the sheriff’s department. I pull the door open and step inside and see the desk officer and step up to him. I brought my identification with me because they won’t release anything without proof of who I am. “How may I help you?” the officer looks from me to Stinger and gives Stinger a chin lift. “I’m here to collect the personal belongings of my father, brother, and sister-in-law.” I say and the officer looks at me in confusion then I see the moment realisation dawns on him. “What is the family name?” He asks and I straighten my spine and lift my head higher. “Kincaid.” I say, and he nods his head solemnly. Everyone in this town knew my family and the MC. Yes, the MC isn’t completely legit, but their bail bondsman licenses are. Even the sheriff knows this and they don’t kick up a stink because the MC keeps the town safe, or that is what we all believe. It’s a shame it comes at a personal cost to us. “I’m sorry for your loss. I know Sheriff Goddard wishes to speak to you. Let me call him.” He says and I nod my head and Stinger takes my hand and walks with me to the seats and I sit down. My elbows rest on my knees as I lean forward, looking at the posters on the wall opposite me. Sheriff Goddard is a good man. He was best friends with my dad and mom. He watched Shane and me grow and he is or was Shane’s godfather. So this will have hurt him the same way it has hurt me. “Shannon, oh sweetheart, I’m so sorry.” Sheriff Goddard comes out of the side door and pulls me up to my feet and engulfs me in a hug. “I’m sorry too. I should have been here.” I tell him and he only tightens his hold on me. “No, if you were with them, you wouldn’t be talking to my old ass. It is good to see you again. It’s just a shame it is because of these circumstances.” He says and I nod my head at his words. I bite down on the inside of my cheek to stop myself from crying. “Come with me. We need to talk, you too, Stinger.” He says and Stinger and I follow behind him as sheriff Goddard barks orders at his men and women. We enter his office and I sit down in front of his desk. “I’m going to tell you what I told Hunter. You need to let us do our jobs. This town, like you and the club, are grieving and the town folks are angry that this happened. Everyone is town has a respect for the MC and a deep love for your family. Your father never gave up on you. He knew where you were and what you were doing. He was always watching you from a distance. Hell, we would meet weekly for coffee and he would tell me about your life. The day your little boy was born, your father was elated, and we drank until sunrise — me, him and Shane.” He chuckles at my expression and he reaches across the desk and pats my hand. “You didn’t really think that your father, being the man he was, didn’t have eyes on his only daughter, now did you? He wouldn’t have been a very good bondsman if he didn’t. He always held out hope that you would come home.” Sheriff Goddard’s smile fades, and I nod my head and swipe my tears from my cheeks. “I want to know who did this and why. I want to know why I’m burying the last of my family beside my mother. Then, I want to deal with them. I’m going to be in town for a while. The club is going into lockdown because of this. I have a funeral to arrange and a son and nieces I have to raise. Those girls deserve to know the truth when they are old enough to understand why they can only see their mommy and daddy in pictures and not have them here to witness every milestone with them. So please, I’m asking you not as the sheriff, but as my father’s best friend. When you find out who it was, you come to me.” I say to him, and the sheriff smiles, shaking his head. “I see that look in your eyes, Shannon. It is the same look that your father and brother would get before they went hunting. Once I know more, I will let you know. Give me your number and I will contact you. The whole town will be there for the funerals, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You have the MC beside you, but you have the entire town as well. I will get you all justice. Now, I need you to sign some forms so I can release their belongings to you. Your father and brother’s bikes are in evidence at the moment but once they are finished, I will call you and you can decide what you want to do with them. I will contact you when your father, brother, and Lily’s bodies are ready to be released by the coroner. Remember what I said, Shannon, let us do our jobs and we will work together on this.” He says before he slides the folders over to me and I sign my name and we leave his office and back to the front desk. Where he hands me clear bags with my father, brother, and Lily’s possessions in them. Leaving the sheriff’s office, I stop on the sidewalk and look down at the three clear plastic bags in my fist and look up at the grey sky. It looks like it will snow. “We will bring you all justice, I promise your deaths won’t be in vain.”
