Chapter 4.

Shannon’s POV. The prospect’s eyes widen and he pulls his phone from inside of his cut and gulps as he fires off a text to Bear and I look down at Chance and he is glaring at the prospect. “You ok baby?” I ask Chance and he looks at me and offers me a small smile. “I gotta go, mommy.” He says, releasing my hand to hold himself whilst crossing his legs. Oh no. “I need to take him to the bathroom. I take it the one in the garage is available?” I ask as I lift a wriggling Chance in my arms, placing him on my hip as I walk past the prospect and around the corner to the garage. “You can’t go in there.” He shouts and I ignore him and find the garage spotless. I push the door to the bathroom open and place Chance down, and he runs to the toilet. “Keep the door open.” I say to Chance and I notice the place is clean. One thing my father made sure of was that every inch of the property was spotless. “Tinkle, tinkle, little pee, you will end up in the sea.” I chuckle, shaking my head as Chance sings the tinkle song. Yeah, I made up a song for him when he started potty training to help him relax. Then I hear the sound of him tinkling and then a big long sigh. “Ok, mommy I’m done.” He says and I pop my head round the cubicle and he is pulling his grey joggers up and flushes the toilet. “Now wash your hands and wait for mommy ok, I need to go too.” I say and head inside the cubicle and close the door, resting my foot against it as I do my business, pull my jeans and underwear back up and flush. I step out and Chance is leaning against the wall with his little arms crossed, looking more and more like his father. I wash my hands and dry them before I hold my hand out to Chance and he takes it as we make our way back towards the gate. I stop in my tracks as I take in the broad back of Bear. He tenses and turns slowly, holding Chance’s backpack. “Shannon.” He says in a whisper and I nod my head, feeling the sting of tears as I stay stock still when Bear approaches me and looks from me to Chance, who has positioned himself in front of me. “Gods girl, it is so damn good to see you again,” Bear says when he squats down and is eye level with Chance. “Why hello, little man. I’m Bear. What is your name?” I look at chance and I nod my head encouraging. “Uncle Bear, I’m Chance Hunter Kincaid. Mommy showed me your picture, but you look different,” Chance says, tilting his head to the side, and I chuckle. Bear smiles and holds his hand out to Chance and Chance shakes his hand. “Yeah, I have a beard now.” Bear says before he looks at me with a question in his eyes. He stands and opens his arms for me and I don’t think. I fling myself into his arms and find myself sobbing on his shoulder as he lifts me up. “It’s good to see you again, Shan. I’m sorry it is under these circumstances. The house is ready and I haven’t told him you’re here. He has taken this hard, but you need to tell him the truth.” Bear whispers in my ear before he kisses my cheek and lets me down. He being Chase. Bear picks up Chance, resting him on his hip. “There is more that I didn’t tell you, but for now let’s get you both settled, and I will call my ol lady to let her know you are home.” He says, and that shocks the s**t out of me. Bear has an ol lady? Well, I never. Bear is called Bear because of his size and his grizzly attitude. I know the women in town or hang-arounds and sweet butts were terrified of him and whenever any one of them thought they could crack that exterior, we would growl and they would run away crying. “I would love to meet the woman who broke down your walls.” I say and he chuckles as he takes my luggage and we walk towards the house that I grew up in at the back of the clubhouse. “Where is everyone?” I ask because the compound feels abandoned. “Inside the clubhouse, mourning.” He says and I nod my head in understanding. “I will have to let Chase know you are here, otherwise he will have my guts for garters.” Bears says and I know he is right. I can’t be put off. “That’s fine, just tell him to keep his cool. I may not have had to use my gun in a while but I still know how to shoot.” I say quietly so that Chance doesn’t hear me and Bear chuckles. “You haven’t changed.” He says and I find myself scoffing before I chuckle. No, I really have. I have become somewhat tame, locked that part of myself away and for good reason. Living in the city and working a dead-end job and living with a cheating, backstabbing piece of s**t. I could never be who I really am, besides I have Chance to take care of and he doesn’t need that side of me coming out. I see the two-storey house that my parents built, the porch swing and the light on beside the door. The drapes are drawn. Bear hands me the key, and I take it but not before seeing the picture keyring on the fob. Pictures of my mother, father, me and Shane. I push the key into the lock and take a breath to steady myself as I turn the key and push the door open. The smell of home hits me. The smell of lavender and spice. I walk inside and turn the lights on. It is exactly as I remember it. I feel my heart crack as I step into the living room and see the big canvas picture of my family above the fireplace. Tears blur my vision. I walk through the living room, hearing my father’s voice telling Shane to stop being a d**k and Shane rolling his eyes as he pulls his cut on before kissing me on the head and walking out of the door. Dad would turn to me and open his arms wide and I would always walk into them and he would kiss my head and tell me he loves me and that mom would be so proud of me before telling me to stay out of trouble before he leaves. Everything is how I left it four years ago. I walk through the house and up the stairs and stop at the door that leads to what was my room. “They left it for you.” Bear says from behind me, and I nod my head as I open the door, and memories slam into me. Memories. That is all I will have now. My knees buckle and I drop onto the soft grey carpet as I see Shane sitting on my bed with me bedside him as we watched a movie or played a video game. I can hear his laughter when he wins and my determination to beat him. “I love you sis, no matter where you go, you will never be alone.” Those words are what he said the day I left. Never have those words felt like ash and lies. “But you did. You have left me alone.” I say aloud when I feel little arms wrap around me from behind and I sob before pulling myself out of the funk and reach round and lift Chance and place him on my lap as I cross my legs and wrap him in my arms. Bear shuffles behind me and sits behind me and wraps his arms around us both. “Let it out, Shan.” He says and I break quietly as I feel the presence of my mom, my dad and now my brother. “What happened?” I ask, and Bear sighs. “You need to speak to Chase.” He says before kissing my head and I nod my head. “Hello.” A woman calls out when I hear a cry and I look at Bear and he grimaces. “It that a baby? You have a baby?” I say to him and he shakes his head. “Hello. Harry, are you up here?” The woman’s voice gets closer, and he looks at me and stands and lifts Chance from me and helps me up. “In here, babe.” He calls out, and a woman who is easier five foot three stops at the door and looks at me and offers me a sad smile. “Shannon, this is my ol lady Katie. Katie, this is Shannon Kincaid and her son Chance.” The woman is stunning, baby blue eyes, shoulder-length dark hair with pink and purple through it. She has a heart-shaped face and a button nose and full pink lips. “I’m sorry for your loss.” She says when a baby’s cry pierces the air and my stomach flips and I go into momma mode and I walk towards the sound with chance beside me, my maternal instinct kicks in. I pick Chance up and run down the stairs and stop in the doorway to the living room, seeing two car seats. Both with a baby girl in. I move towards them when they open their eyes and I drop to my knees. White-blonde hair and silver-coloured eyes. I look at Bear and Katie over my shoulder. “Whose babies are they?” I ask because my heart is drumming hard and fast against my ribcage as Chance looks at the girls. “Look, mommy they have your hair and eyes.” Chance says, pointing and I gulp. “These are Shane and Lily’s girls. Lily was Shane’s ol lady and was with him and your father when the accident happened. They were on their way to pay respects to your mom. Shannon, these are your nieces, Gypsy, and Rose.”
