The Dark Has Come Again

373 Words
The squirrels bounce from the trees to the ground as I walk steadily down the path. The woods are full of life today, with many little creatures scurrying about. Making my way through the woods, feeling the sun pouring through the leaves. I enjoy these walks through nature, feeling settled in this place as if I am part of it. There is a secret spot I hold dear. It is deeper in the woods but, worth the long walk. I start to feel a little anxious as I proceed into the thicker forest. My anxiety is short lived as I walk through the last bit of foliage into a clearing. The clearing is not big yet, the sun finds its way in, settling my soul yet again. I quickly make my way to the sturdy tree that supports me as I read. Sitting down into the soft grass, I begin my descent into fantasy land. The woman in my book finds her true love and he never leaves her side. He protects her and values her, as she does him. Sometimes I think finding that love would make me feel whole again. Other times, I know I am better off alone. I do not realize that it is getting later and darker as I am immersed in the fantasy that is unconditional love. Soon though, I open my eyes only to see, I had fallen asleep while reading my book! I am never that careless, always getting back to my home before night has set in. Uneasily, I feel around with my trembling hands to find my novel that must have slipped onto the grassy ground beneath me. I’m quick to realize that it is not within my reach, no matter how far I stretch. Knowing that more perilous creatures roam the woods at night, I give up my search. Standing, I turn in the direction of home, freezing instantly as I hear the crack of a twig right next to me. I am frozen with fear, dreading what I can not see but, what most likely can see me. Suddenly, I feel a warm breath against my arm, I take off running into the abyss as fast as my legs will allow.
