The double life, and safe key

795 Words
The morning light crept lazily through the sheer curtains, spilling across the bedroom, casting stripes of gold over the polished floor. Alina shifted slightly, feeling the warmth of Riaan behind her, his hand trailing possessively along her waist. She inhaled sharply at the familiar, grounded weight of him, the heat of his skin, the subtle scent of his cologne mixing with the soft morning air. “Morning,” Riaan murmured, his lips brushing the nape of her neck. “Did you sleep well?” Alina’s eyes flicked to the far corner of the room, where a strange, almost imperceptible shimmer hung in the air. The hair on her arms stood on end. Arjun. He was there, unseen by Riaan, his presence heavy, palpable. Dark eyes glinting with centuries of longing and an unmistakable, possessive jealousy. She pressed a finger lightly to her lips, then traced a subtle path along the space beside her shoulder, a silent signal meant only for him. Do not claim her, Arjun’s voice whispered, sharp yet restrained, echoing in her mind. Riaan leaned closer, murmuring against her shoulder, “You feel tense. Am I making you nervous?” Alina let her fingers brush against his wrist, a faint smile on her lips, her eyes flicking subtly toward the corner where shadows moved unnaturally. “Maybe a little,” she murmured softly, the words playful, teasing, layered with hidden meaning. Arjun’s invisible form seemed to coil closer, pressing against her in a way only she could sense. Mine, he breathed, and a shiver ran down her spine. “You’re mine this morning,” Riaan murmured, pressing a soft kiss along her shoulder. Alina’s lips curved into a small, mischievous smile. Her hand slid lightly across his wrist, a silent, teasing defiance, a message to Arjun without betraying herself. Riaan straightened, finally leaving for his meeting. The moment the door clicked closed, Alina exhaled, releasing tension she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. Shadows shifted, the air around her thickened, charged with the ghostly presence she felt more keenly than any human touch. “I remember everything… all of it,” she whispered, voice trembling, almost reverent. Good, Arjun murmured, low, possessive. Hold onto it. There’s more… but not yet. Drawn by instinct, Alina descended the staircase, the cool air of the basement wrapping around her. Dust motes danced in shafts of sunlight that managed to creep through the small, high window. Her fingers traced the edge of the old chest, worn and polished by centuries of neglect. She lifted the lid, the hinges creaking in protest, revealing a neatly folded hoodie. Her breath caught. The fabric smelled faintly of him—of Arjun—time itself folded into its fibers. She pressed it against her face, heart hammering, and memories surged unbidden: --- The past—a vivid, unbroken instant. Arjun stood beneath a canopy of golden sunlight, eyes dark, endless, burning with desire and longing. “Alina… do you feel how much I’ve waited?” His hand lifted a loose strand of her hair, tucking it behind her ear with infinite care. “You… shouldn’t,” she whispered, lips trembling, voice soft, breath caught in the space between them. “I’ve always been yours,” he murmured, his lips pressing to hers in a kiss that was all-consuming, all-encompassing. Hands tracing her waist, the small of her back, holding her as though the universe itself could not tear them apart. Every heartbeat, every whispered word, every shiver was eternal. “I… I missed you,” she breathed into his mouth, clutching at him, the past and present colliding. “Never again,” he whispered, holding her so close the world fell away. “You are mine, Alina. Always.” --- Alina exhaled, tears pricking her eyes as she clutched the hoodie to her chest. Beneath it, her fingers brushed something cold and metallic—a small key. Its weight was heavy, full of significance, a key not just to a safe, but to answers she could feel pulsing through her veins. This opens the next part, Arjun murmured, the possessiveness in his voice tightening around her like a living thing. She ascended slowly to Riaan’s study. The polished wood gleamed in the morning sunlight, shadows pooling in the corners. Heart racing, fingers trembling, she slid the key into the lock of the safe. Click. The lock yielded, swinging open. Inside lay a single photograph. Alina’s hands trembled as she slowly lifted the photograph from the safe. Her eyes widened, breath caught in her throat. Every beat of her heart seemed to echo in the silent study. She froze completely, staring at the image, unable to move, unable to think. The room held its breath with her. And then—Chapter 10 ended.
