Amara didn’t sleep.
She lay beneath the thin blanket in her small room, staring at the ceiling while the strange voice inside her remained silent.
That frightened her more than hearing it.
Silence meant she couldn’t understand it.
She couldn’t control it.
And she had no idea what “He has found us” was supposed to mean.
She turned onto her side and closed her eyes.
Immediately, Lucian’s face appeared in her mind.
His dark eyes.
His voice.
The way his fingers had wrapped around her wrist.
The way his wolf had reacted to her.
Mate.
The word made her heart race.
“No,” she whispered.
It couldn’t be true.
Lucian was destined for someone else.
Everyone knew that.
And if he truly considered her his mate, why hadn’t the Moon ever revealed it before?
Why now?
Amara sat up.
She pressed both hands against her face.
“This is ridiculous.”
She had spent years teaching herself not to dream about Lucian.
Tonight, all those carefully built walls had begun to crumble.
A knock sounded at her door.
Amara froze.
Another knock.
“Amara?”
Mira.
Amara quickly wiped her eyes and opened the door.
Her cousin stood outside, arms folded.
“You disappeared from the celebration.”
“I wasn’t feeling well.”
Mira studied her suspiciously.
“You were with Lucian.”
Amara’s stomach tightened.
“We talked.”
“About what?”
“Nothing important.”
Mira stepped inside.
“You need to be careful.”
Amara frowned.
“Why does everyone keep telling me that?”
“Because you’re getting attention from someone you have no business getting close to.”
Amara looked away.
Mira lowered her voice.
“Selene is furious.”
“I don’t care.”
“You should.”
Amara turned back.
“Why?”
“Because Selene isn’t just some girl who likes Lucian.”
Mira paused.
“Her father controls three territories. Their families have been negotiating an alliance for years.”
Amara understood.
Lucian’s relationship with Selene wasn’t merely romantic.
It was political.
“I know.”
“Then stay away from him.”
Amara’s chest tightened.
“I wasn’t chasing him.”
“Good.”
Mira walked toward the door.
“Keep it that way.”
After she left, Amara remained standing in silence.
She wanted to be angry.
Instead, she felt strangely empty.
Because deep down, she knew Mira was right.
Lucian’s world wasn’t meant for her.
The next morning, Amara woke before sunrise.
She dressed quickly and slipped outside.
She needed somewhere quiet.
The forest had always been that place.
She walked beyond the training grounds and followed a narrow path between the trees.
The deeper she went, the calmer she felt.
Until she heard footsteps.
Amara stopped.
“Who’s there?”
Nothing.
She turned around.
Nobody.
Her heartbeat quickened.
Then a low growl sounded behind her.
Amara spun around.
A massive black wolf stood between the trees.
She recognized him instantly.
Lucian.
Her body went completely still.
The wolf stared at her.
Its golden eyes were fixed on hers.
“Lucian?”
The wolf took one step forward.
Amara stepped backward.
“Why are you following me?”
The wolf growled softly.
Then something strange happened.
A sharp pain suddenly pierced Amara’s chest.
She gasped and dropped to her knees.
The forest blurred around her.
Images flashed through her mind.
A woman standing beneath a blood-red moon.
A silver wolf.
A baby crying.
A pair of glowing golden eyes.
Then darkness.
Amara screamed.
The black wolf rushed toward her.
But before he could reach her, the pain disappeared.
Amara collapsed onto the ground, breathing heavily.
The wolf transformed.
Lucian crouched beside her.
“Amara!”
She looked up at him.
“What happened?”
“I don’t know.”
He helped her sit upright.
His hands remained on her shoulders.
“You were screaming.”
“I saw something.”
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
Lucian stared into her eyes.
“Tell me.”
“A woman.”
“What woman?”
“I don’t know.”
“Was she a wolf?”
Amara hesitated.
“Yes.”
Lucian’s expression changed.
“What did she look like?”
“I couldn’t see her face.”
He went silent.
Something about her answer clearly frightened him.
Amara noticed.
“What is it?”
“Nothing.”
“You’re lying.”
Lucian looked away.
She grabbed his sleeve.
“Lucian.”
His eyes returned to hers.
For a moment, neither spoke.
The distance between them suddenly felt too small.
Amara could feel his warmth.
She could smell his scent.
Pine.
Smoke.
Something uniquely him.
Lucian’s gaze dropped to her lips.
Her breath caught.
Neither of them moved.
Then his wolf pushed forward.
Touch her.
Lucian clenched his fists.
“Go back to the pack.”
Amara’s expression fell.
“What?”
“Stay away from the forest.”
“Why?”
“Because I said so.”
His Alpha voice slipped into his words.
Amara immediately stiffened.
“I don’t take orders from you.”
Lucian looked surprised.
She stood.
“I may be wolfless, but I’m not your property.”
“I didn’t say you were.”
“You didn’t have to.”
She turned to leave.
Lucian caught her wrist.
“Amara.”
She looked back.
His expression softened.
“I’m trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
He didn’t answer.
“From your own wolf?”
Lucian froze.
Amara’s eyes widened.
She hadn’t meant to say it.
But something inside her had suddenly whispered the words.
He knows.
Lucian released her.
“How did you know?”
“I don’t.”
He stared at her for several seconds.
Then his gaze shifted toward the trees.
Something had changed.
The air smelled different.
Heavy.
Ancient.
Dangerous.
Lucian’s wolf growled inside him.
Not at Amara.
At something watching them.
He stepped in front of her.
“Stay behind me.”
A branch snapped in the distance.
Amara’s heart pounded.
“Lucian…”
A pair of glowing eyes appeared between the trees.
Then another.
And another.
They were surrounded.
Lucian’s claws began to emerge.
“Whatever happens,” he said quietly, “don’t run.”
Amara swallowed.
“Who are they?”
Lucian’s eyes darkened.
“I don’t know.”
The mysterious voice inside Amara finally returned.
This time, it wasn’t frightened.
It sounded almost angry.
They’ve come for the blood.
