It must have been a mighty river’s cradle at one time, for there was still a hint of fish in the air, but now it was a dry bed of water-rounded stones where nothing wanted to grow. The first true foothill stood on the far side of this wadi; and its lower slopes were shingled with boulders. “We’ll make camp there,” Pawl said, pointing to the top of the hill. It seemed obscenely green compared to all that lay below it. “The horses won’t be able to carry us through this rock-field, though, so we’ll have to get down and walk.” Neither woman argued with him.
