HAZEL POV
It actually took me two heartbeats to fully digest what Father had said. Didn’t he realise he was literally sending me to my own death?
“I…” I parted my lips to speak, but Theodore’s mother stood up from the couch and walked towards me. Whatever I had been about to say disappeared.
“I know you can do this for Theodore. I hope you wouldn’t want him to die on you. I know you wouldn’t want to cause his death, just like you let everyone around you die,” his mother said, and I swallowed hard.
They didn’t f*****g understand me. They didn’t know who Alpha Knox was, and maybe that was why they were acting like this. I am going to end up dead if he catches me.
Goddess.
“I’m sure she will do it. I want you to get ready. Zoe will help you with what to wear. We are all counting on you,” Father said. At that point, I knew that no matter what I said, their decision was not going to change.
Night came before I could even think about running away. They had made sure men were guarding every exit to prevent me from escaping. Father had even promised to give me back my property documents if his son eventually woke up, and that was what I was betting on.
I wanted to believe one last time that Theodore would probably love me again, so I had no choice but to agree.
“All done,” Zoe said and stepped back from behind me. She finally brought the standing mirror so I could check my reflection.
I stood up from the chair and walked in front of the mirror. My eyes widened when I saw my reflection. She was literally good at her job because she had completely transformed me. I looked so pretty, and the black dress accentuated my curves.
The slit on the dress exposed my thick thighs, and I had to admit I looked like a vixen. Zoe cleared her throat and handed me the silver purse to match the heels.
“The men will accompany you to the Pack house,” Zoe said and led the way outside.
With each step I took, my heart filled with dread. The last time I had seen Knox was in my third year. The guy had bullied me a lot because of my size, and another reason was that I am human even though I was born to a werewolf mother. I didn’t know. I have a feeling he might recognise me tonight or maybe not.
Though I was no longer the same girl from six years ago, I was afraid he might actually notice me. Well, I doubted he would.
I got into the car and the man drove me to the pack house, which I knew was the most beautiful and extravagant place in the entire Ravencrest Pack.
The car stopped, and one of the men helped me out.
“We will wait for you here after the party. You have until 11 a.m., or we will assume something went wrong and we will have no choice but to leave you,” the man said, and I nodded.
They gave me my mask and I draped the black mask over my face. It covered only the upper half of my face, leaving my lips and nose bare.
I checked my wristwatch. The time read 8:39 p.m. I was sure I would make it in time.
I made my way inside the Pack house after the security guards at the door let me in and showed me where the party was being held. My eyes took in the surroundings and my mouth fell open in shock. I had thought it would be pitch black inside, but there were actually bulbs lighting up the tall buildings. Different cars were parked outside, and many beautiful ladies made their way into the hall. I followed right behind them and heard them whispering.
“It’s actually been a long time since I saw the Alpha King. I heard he is young and very handsome,” one of the girls said, and I rolled my eyes because that was indeed true.
Not many people had known him back then in the academy because he rarely came to school, but there had been rumours. I had seen him in person more than once. He would have grown up into a very handsome, tall man.
“What were you expecting? My father told me he is still on the lookout for his Luna. He is still single,” the other girl said.
“I pray I get chosen. I celebrated my 18th birthday last month,” she said with excitement in her voice. When they reached the entrance, they stopped talking and we all made our way into the hall.
Well, I thought I had seen it all, but this place looked absolutely beautiful. The hall was bustling with both young men and women of the Ravencrest Pack. They all looked stunning, and the MC stepped onto the stage at the same time we walked in.
“Welcome to the Masquerade party, people of Ravencrest Pack,” the MC said, and everyone applauded.
“You should know we have different activities planned for this party. We are not only celebrating the King but are also in anticipation that the future Luna might actually be among the young maidens,” the MC continued, and I must say the ladies were clearly the most excited ones now.
“We can pair up and move to the dance floor. The Alpha King is already on his way to address us,” the MC said, and everyone moved forward to sway to the music.
I stayed rooted in one place, hoping the Alpha King would appear soon so I could quickly do what I had come here to do.
“Hi, pretty,” I heard a male voice say. I looked up to see who it was.
“Hi,” I replied when my eyes met his dark ones. The man was wearing a blue suit and looked very tall. Even with the mask, I could tell he was a very handsome man.
“May I have this dance?” he asked, and for some reason, I decided to take his hand. At least it would distract me.
“Yes,” I said, and we moved to the dance floor. We began to dance, and he asked me a question, probably wanting some conversation while we twirled to the music.
“Can I know your name?” he asked, his voice calm and deep.
“I thought you were supposed to ask after the dance,” I replied, my eyes still searching for one particular person.
“I guess I couldn’t wait because I’m afraid another man will come for you. They are looking at you even now,” he said. I looked up and realised he was right. I swallowed, trying to calm myself.
“My name is Fiona,” I lied, and he smiled.
“You have a beautiful name,” he complimented me, and I smiled back.
I think he was about to introduce himself, but the music slowed down and everyone’s attention suddenly shifted to the man who had just descended the stairs. Though he wore a mask like everyone else, the rest of us could tell he was no ordinary man.
He took the microphone, his eyes scanning everyone, and his presence alone screamed authority.
He is the one.
There is no way I wouldn't recognise him even with the mask.
He is Alpha Knox.
“Hello, people of Ravencrest Pack,” he said. His voice reverberated through the walls of the hall. My eyes stayed glued on him as he addressed the crowd, until a lady boldly walked up to him.
I think they were going to dance.
This was my cue to leave. It was the only chance I had to make a run for my life after obtaining the antidote.
“I’m sorry, excuse me. I need to use the restroom,” I said and left the hall.
I tried to recall everything Father had said and the route I needed to take to get to the King’s room. He had made it clear that I needed to be fast, so that was exactly what I was going to do.
I took the route, and five minutes later, I was standing in front of the King’s building. The maid would ask me a question, and I needed to answer the way Father had taught me.
The door opened and a middle-aged woman walked out. “Hello, I’m here to serve the King tonight,” I said. The woman let me in without a word.
“I’m afraid he isn’t in his room yet,” she said, and I nodded.
“I will wait inside,” I said and made my way towards the stairs. I opened the door and stepped into the room, which was extremely extravagant. I began searching for the antidote quickly before he returned.
It was as if luck was on my side because I immediately saw the bottle. I took out the bottle I had hidden and poured part of its contents into it before covering it back.
Just as I tried to leave the room, I heard commotion right outside the door. Or maybe I was hallucinating, because there was no way Alpha Knox was back already.
