Chapter 3
Dominic opens the double doors to which I assume is now Ethan and Evan's home. Immediately my eyes need time to adjust. It's much darker inside than it is outside.
"Come in please." Ethan said softly.
My eyes having just becoming accustomed to the candle lights. Someone had completely transformed this old high school into a modern yet medieval decorated home. Silvers and light grays mixed with light icy blues seemed to be the color scheme. I was led to a sitting room to the right of the hallway inside the doors.
Evan already sitting on an off white pearl type colored sofa. The icy blues continued from the hallway into the sitting room but instead of silvers, the coloring was the same off white, pearl type color. The flooring looked like the wood from a barn, not the red barns but the ones left without paint. The distressed wood was finished with glossy coating making the color just gorgeous. All of the furniture was the same color as the sofa and the walls were the same icy blue from the hallway.
I choose to sit in a high backed and very soft chair next to the sofa.
"So, the job?" I look at Evan before finding Ethan, who is getting comfortable in the same style chair across from me.
"Yes... the job..." Evan flashed a smile. I notice his bright white teeth. His canines are larger than the rest of his teeth. I suddenly believe I know why I'm here. My throat starts to feel itchy, my skin to tingle, my heart to race and the hair on my neck to stand.
"Are you f*****g serious?" I stand. "You're a vampire? Looks like my job is being dinner!" I scream.
All three of them laugh.
"I'm not a vampire." laughed Dominic.
"You probably bring them food! You probably work for them!" I scream, while my eyes and brain search for a way out of this room.
Ethan stands. His laughter calms and he looks me in the eyes with his icy blues. If he weren't a vampire, I'd melt into them but right now I need to get away.
"Please don't leave. Please sit back down and listen to what the job is." his voice like velvet. I know what he's doing. He's using charm. I let him think it works and sit. I roll my dark green eyes.
"Your charm doesn't work on her." pipes up Evan. I shoot him a look. "If looks could kill, I'd be dead." he jokes. "Too bad I am already."
"Fine, what's the job?" I look back at Ethan.
"I need you to come here twice a day, every day. Once in the morning to unlock all of the doors and once before dark, to lock all of the doors and get back home before dark." Ethan explains.
"She needs to feed the dogs in the bus barn at both times too," says Evan. "We know how dogs can get if they aren't fed."
Ethan nods. "Those doors needs locked and unlocked as well. All doors on the grounds needs locked and unlocked daily."
"Okay, what else?" I say. This job doesn't seem to be that bad, except for the fact that they are vampires.
"That is it." Ethan says.
"What do I get?" I wonder if it would be worth it.
"You can have any and all food in the orchards, gardens, and access to the animals on the farm at our other home just outside of town here." Ethan knew exactly what I was looking for in this agreement.
"She'll need a dog too." Evan interjected.
"Oh yes, protection." Ethan looked at Dominic. Honestly, other than them being vampires, I'm not sure what I need protection from. I whisper the spells whenever I move to a new place to protect myself.
"I've got a pup just out of training. But he will need a few days to get used to her being a human before he goes home with her." Dominic explains to Ethan.
"Make it so." Ethan commands. He hands me a key chain.
"I didn't agree to do this yet." I say.
"Well, do you want this job or not?" Evan quips.
"Wait, you have other properties?" I realize what Ethan had said.
"I mean you kind of already owe us." Evan spits out.
"What? How?" I'm confused.
"You took things from our corner store and put them in our van that you stole. And you are squatting in one of our houses two towns over." Evan was telling me but I have the feeling he was telling On me to Ethan.
Ethan looking at him just as confused. "I went there to get gas for the car. Sara is in the corner store dead by the way, it wasn't me. This girl...Tansi? She is squatting in SARA's house and stole Sara's car to get here."
Ethan looked at me. He was thinking.
"Sara is dead?" he repeated back to Evan and Evan nodded. "Stupid, stupid woman. I knew she wouldn't be able to make the transition."
"Transition?" I question.
"She was going to be one of us, a mate for another in this house." Ethan explains, "She still lived out there, hadn't moved in yet. Roscoe isn't going to be happy but we'll have to talk to him after lock up tonight. Dominic, go show Tansi what to do please. I want lock up to be early tonight."
"Who should I get for protection while I work with her pup?"
"You. Show her the job and then go stay with her tonight at Sara's. If nothing else, there's the basement. I trust you though." Ethan says back to Dominic. "Just start lock up now."
"You got it." Dominic starts to walk out of the room, I stand up and follow. "Well, since everyone is home, locking up early isn't a problem. Let's go down the hallway and get the dog food from the kitchen. ALWAYS start with the dog food first. If you make them happy, they will always listen to your command."
We turned into a swinging door that opened into a very large kitchen, it looks like the school kitchen got a military yet posh style upgrade.
"You don't have to carry anything or take anything anywhere, you just put this black key," he take the key chain from my hand, "Over here in this key hole and turn. Then walk over to the sink to this key hole and use the same key again."
"That seems easy enough. How many dogs are there?" I say.
"There are 23 currently but that could change any day now. One of the females is going to have a litter soon." Dominic says with a smile. "Come out this door." he says while pushing on a wall. The wall gives way, a secret door... nice. "Walk out to this building, the vamp's call it a bus barn..." He says while walking through some trees as I follow close behind. The trees soon give way to an old bus barn next to an old elementary school. "This is the dog house."
"All?" I was surprised.
"Yes, 23 dogs plus some on the way...they need a lot of room." He said looking forward. "I stay here, in the old school. That's my apartment there with the green curtains, the ones like your eyes." I could see the window he was describing.
"You live here too?"
"Yep. Just inside."
