Luna Carter stood alone in the grand ballroom, watching the man she had loved for three years smile at another woman.
Her husband.
Alexander Blackwood.
To the world, he was one of the most powerful CEOs in the city. Wealthy, handsome, intelligent, and impossible to approach.
But to Luna, he was simply the man who had once promised to protect her.
A promise he seemed to have forgotten.
Luna held a glass of water in her hand as she watched Alexander standing beside Victoria Hayes. Victoria was beautiful, elegant, and from a wealthy family. She looked perfect beside him.
Perfect enough to make Luna feel invisible.
“Mrs. Blackwood,” someone suddenly said behind her.
Luna turned around nervously.
The woman quickly smiled. “I’m sorry. I thought you were Mr. Blackwood’s wife.”
Luna forced a smile.
“You are mistaken.”
The woman looked confused. “Oh. I heard he was married.”
“He is,” Luna answered quietly.
“But his wife isn’t here tonight.”
Luna looked toward Alexander again.
Yes.
His wife was here.
She was standing only a few steps away from him.
Yet no one knew.
Three years ago, Luna had married Alexander in a private ceremony. There had been no wedding dress, no guests, and no celebration.
Just two signatures.
A ring.
And a promise.
Alexander had told her, “For now, our marriage must remain a secret.”
Luna had agreed.
She loved him.
At that time, she believed love was enough.
But three years had passed.
Their marriage was still a secret.
Alexander had never introduced her as his wife.
He had never held her hand in public.
And tonight, Luna was standing alone while another woman smiled beside her husband.
Her phone suddenly vibrated.
Alexander: Come to my office.
Luna stared at the message for several seconds.
Then she quietly left the ballroom.
His office was on the top floor of the Blackwood Tower. Luna entered the private elevator and watched the city lights disappear beneath her.
She felt tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
For three years, she had waited for Alexander to choose her openly.
Tonight, she finally understood something painful.
Maybe he never would.
The elevator doors opened.
Luna walked toward his office and slowly pushed the door open.
Alexander was standing beside the large window.
He did not turn around.
“You left the ballroom early.”
“I had a headache,” Luna said.
Alexander finally faced her.
His cold blue eyes studied her.
“You should have stayed.”
Luna laughed softly.
“Why?”
His eyebrows narrowed.
“Because you are my wife.”
The words hurt more than they comforted her.
Luna looked at him.
“Only when no one is watching.”
Silence filled the room.
Alexander’s expression changed slightly.
“What do you mean?”
Luna placed her glass on his desk.
“I mean exactly what I said.”
“Luna—”
“No.”
Her voice was quiet, but firm.
“For three years, I have been your secret. I cannot introduce myself as your wife. I cannot stand beside you at events. I cannot even defend our marriage because nobody knows it exists.”
Alexander looked away.
“It was necessary.”
“Three years, Alexander.”
Luna felt tears burning in her eyes.
“Is it still necessary?”
He said nothing.
That silence gave her the answer.
Luna took a deep breath.
Then she slowly removed the wedding ring from her finger.
Alexander immediately looked back at her.
“What are you doing?”
Her hand trembled as she placed the ring on his desk.
“I’m tired.”
“Luna.”
“I’m tired of waiting for you to love me the way I love you.”
Alexander’s face became cold.
“You are being emotional.”
Luna smiled sadly.
“Maybe.”
She picked up her bag.
“But this is the first time in three years that I am choosing myself.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“Where are you going?”
“Home.”
“You are already home.”
Luna shook her head.
“No, Alexander.”
She looked directly into his eyes for the last time.
“Your house was never my home.”
Then she walked away.
Behind her, Alexander called her name.
But for the first time in three years, Luna did not stop.
Because tonight, the hidden wife had finally decided to disappear.
And Alexander Blackwood had no idea that losing her would become the biggest mistake of his life.
