Chapter 11 - Plead for time

1944 Words
"Sebastian. Fast " it had been a long time since I said Sebastian to hurry up, despite the fact that we were over speeding and the police were already after our location. I was worried. So worried that my palms were sweating and I was fidgeting with my fingers. It was a long way to reach my aunt's house and a time-consuming drive thanks to the evergreen new york traffic. As we sped through the speeding cars and familiar yellow cabs. I felt a little relieved. After another 15 minutes, we were at the front of my aunt's house. I dashed through the front door, luckily it was open. Putting my sling bag aside I climbed up the fleet of stairs where Ethan stood. When he saw me he rushed to hug me. " Shes panting Mel. I didn't know what to do. I tried to call Victor and Ashley but seems like no ones noticing ." " Its okay I am here. Now let's go check her health " We entered the room and there lay our joyous aunt on a bed. Covered with blankets and with a thermometer in her mouth. As Ethan said she was panting. I went over to her as I grabbed her hand. that stirred her up a little as she woke up from her semi-slumber. I signaled her to relax as I checked her thermometer first. She didn't have a fever. that was one good thing. I checked her pulse and it was very weak. Her panting grew stronger as the cold dangerous realization hit me. "Ethan. Call Sebastian. She needs to be hospitalized " I said. Ethan went downstairs as I helped aunt Brooke to sit on the bed. Sebastian and then soon arrived as we carried her from her room to the limo waiting. While Sebastian and Ethan took a seat in the front I stayed with my aunt for the rest of the drive. We reached the hospital and I called a group of nurses to help my aunt. She was taken away on a stretcher into a hospital room. We weren't allowed to go in and hence we stood out. It felt like we were sitting there for days together. The red light above the hospital door was lit throughout. Ethan was devastated and so was I. I should have never gone to Orchid Mansion. If I hadn't any of this could have happened. She would've been in such good care. I am not blaming this on Ethan but as a 16-year-old guy, I knew he couldn't have taken such decisions on his own. It felt as if I was the one to blame. Not Ethan, Not Sebastian, Not my boss but me. I was the one who was so willing to go to Orchid Mansion for some pathetic answers. I wasn't thinking right. It's all my fault. Tears started to sting at the corners of my eyes. A distant sound of a door being opened broke away my self-loathing. The door creaked open as the doctor exited. We stood up immediately, as we waited for him to continue. " Hows my aunt ?" I asked " She had a Cardiac arrest. Nothing to worry about. She's in safe hands now. But cardiac arrest can be frequent. We need to monitor her for a minimum of 7 days until we discharge her from the hospital. I would suggest you leave her in our hands for the next 7 days. As a matter of fact, the consultation and the room rent has to be paid. Please do ask the front desk for the fees. Thank you " he said and left. We entered the hospital chamber to find our aunt asleep. She looked way peaceful now. Closing the split doors I stationed Ethan to be at her side till I paid the bills. The consultation charges and the room rent combined were $ 2200. The room rent only being $1000/day. Luckily Ethan had taken my sling which contained $3000. I paid the bill as I debated whether to let her stay or take her home. Making her stay here would be difficult as I had to pay $7000 dollar plus the additional consultation charges. As an advance, the hospital asked for $3000 as a confirmation. My head was spinning. My payment day was very far. Waiting for payment meant another 15 days. I could ask him to give my payment but will he agree to it? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- " Hello ?" " Yes, Ms.Raykar. Why did you call me earlier ?" "Sir. Sorry to disturb. But this is an emergency. My aunt has had a cardiac arrest and I am in need of money. So I was hoping I would get my payment o-or or at least an advance so I could pay the bill." " The market is tight, Ms. Raykar. At this time the question of payment is very tough. I'll inform you later, at present I'm busy .'' The line went dead soon after. But my heart was still pounding. I kept my phone in my back pocket as I went to room no. 573. Ethan looked at me with hopeful eyes but in response, I just shook my head. I had even tried calling Ashley or Victor but looks like everyone broke. They too said they were coming to meet her tomorrow. I took a seat next to Ethan as I kept my hand on his shoulder. It was a devastating time in our lives. I had never expected this to happen but as they as expect the unexpected. I felt lost. Ethan went out to bring us something to eat as I took my aunt's hand in mine. She had been given one sleeping pill and a painkiller. After what felt like an eternity, Ethan came back with taking away food. We ate in silence as I kept checking my phone from time to time. One Text One Call One Ring Nothing .. I waited and waited but no sound came. I don't know for how long I was awake. Ethan was asleep on one of the visiting chairs. I, on the other hand, was suffering from sleeplessness. I switched off the light overhead. As I took my earplugs and thought of listening to music could be my cure. But now that I saw my phone it was dead. All the battery had been drained out and all that was left was a black screen. Like my life even my phone was black.......dark and sad. Rest all was blurry since I don't even know when darkness consumed me. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- " Mel. Wake up " a soft voice said their cool breath fanning my cheeks. It was a bit difficult to wake up because of the irregularity of my sleep. I opened my eyes to see the morning sun shining through the window opposite to where I was. Everything was blurry at first but when my eyes adjusted to the surroundings I could see everything clearly. I looked up to the owner of the cool voice. Black hair and calming blue eyes were the ones I noticed first. Then when my brain kicked in I recognized him immediately. "Hey. How are you ?" Victor said " Just a bit sleepy and tired. Where's Ethan ?" I asked " Ethan's finishing the billing process," Victor said. My heart sank we had to take her back. She had to be discharged. Since I had no money to pay for the charges. I nodded at Victor as I made my way to the reception desk. Ethan was seated on the empty wired chairs as I joined him. He smiled at me. I felt confused. It wasn't a sad smile, It was a happy one. I looked at him in a questioning way. " Why are you smiling ?" I asked " Because our aunt is going to be alright, " he said " You are finishing the billing process. Right?. Aunts going home so ......how is she gonna be taken care of? Appoint a home doctor ?'' I asked "Mel. She's gonna stay right here. Among specialists, until she gets alright " " But how?" " He called this morning ........he said he is gonna pay for it. Though you will be repaying him in installments. " Ethan said. I knew which 'He' he was talking about. It just felt unreal. I thought by the way he was talking, he wouldn't have done it ......But he did. A slow smile crept up my face. I was wrong. That block of granite was not as bad as he seemed to be . I patted n Ethan's shoulder , as I said I needed some fresh air . The city was back roaring traffic , people swarming , women with their expensive handbags and dogs . Everything seemed normal except one thing . A posh limo that was at the other side of the road . I knew whose it was very well . The tall silhouette of a man barking on the phone confirmed it . Looking at both sides , I crossed the road . I jogged my way to the limo . There were many people who were just gasping , putting their hands on their mouths , whispering . But he paid no heed to it . He had his back towards me . I tapped on his back as he turned around and looked at me . I just smiled . He kept the phone down in his jacket as he arched an eyebrow at me. "Mr.King, I am so thankful to you. You actually saved my life and I don't know how to express it but I wanna say thank you for all you have done and I'll be paying the money in installments. If that is fine with you ?" "It's fine. Today I'll give you a day off. On Monday morning, If I don't see you on that desk. Consider yourself to be fired. Am I clear ?" " Crystal sir. " " I'll be leaving then. Good day" He got into the limo as Sebastian sped away. I just felt happy. For once I knew that my aunt was in safe hands. I ate my breakfast in a nearby diner. When I returned everyone was there Ethan, Victor, Ashley, Josh, and Mikey. We all stayed with my aunt for the next few hours. The doctors would come and check up on here and then again we would enjoy each others company. It was like a family reunion. Josh volunteered to bring us our food and we happily agreed. Josh had a thing for seafood I guess because when he returned all the packages were loaded with shrimps , calamari , anchovies , fried fillets . We all ate as the topic of Roberto's party came up. Ashley put that topic forward when she noticed my odd fashion. "Guys. What are we gonna wear ?" " I am not coming guys, " I said " Why ?" Everyone asked me in unison " Aunts ill guys. I need to stay over "I said "Mel. I'll stay with Aunt Brooke. You all go " Mikey said "Really? " Ethan asked " Yes, you all go. I am gonna sit over here with my mobile and fly with time " Ashley, on the other hand, gave me a stare which clearly meant I had to come. Now, who was I kidding with? They were gonna take me at any cost. So, Let the night begin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you so much for your love !!!!
