CHAPTER 5: SMALL GESTURE

842 Words
Ethan wasn’t sure when he first noticed Lily. Maybe it was her quiet smile in the hallways, or the way her laughter seemed to cut through the noise of the crowded cafeteria. There was something magnetic about her—a warmth that drew him in despite the distance between them. For weeks, he had admired her from afar, too shy to approach. But Ethan was nothing if not creative, and his heart demanded he do something. One day, as he stood at his locker, staring at the blank notebook in his hands, an idea struck him. It didn’t need to be grand. Maybe just a little note—a gesture so small it wouldn’t feel overwhelming. He tore a page from the notebook and carefully wrote: *"You have the kindest laugh—it makes the whole hallway brighter."* Underneath, he sketched a little cartoon sun with a goofy grin. Ethan folded the note, his heart hammering in his chest as he made his way to Lily’s locker. Glancing around to make sure no one was watching, he slipped the note through the vent and hurried away. The next morning, Ethan lingered near Lily’s locker, pretending to search for a book he didn’t need. When she arrived, she opened the locker door, paused, and then pulled out the note. Her lips curved into a smile, and then she laughed—a sound so joyful it made Ethan’s heart ache. That single laugh was enough to keep him going. Ethan decided to make it a routine. Every couple of days, he would write a new note, each one carrying a compliment, a silly joke, or a tiny doodle. *"Did you know your smile is scientifically proven to be contagious? I felt it yesterday. Thanks for that!"* *"Why did the scarecrow win an award? Because he was outstanding in his field. (P.S. So are you.)"* *"Your kindness is like sunlight. It reaches everyone in its path."* With every note, he tried to capture a piece of what made her special. At first, Ethan was content to remain anonymous, but then Lily began to reply. She wrote little thank-you notes and left them in her locker for him to find. *"Your jokes make my day. Whoever you are, thank you!"* *"I needed that laugh today. You have a great sense of humor."* Ethan felt a surge of happiness every time he found one of her replies. Though they still hadn’t spoken face-to-face, the notes created a connection between them. He felt like he was getting to know her through her words—her humor, her gratitude, her heart. One day, he wrote a note that was a little more personal than usual: *"Do you ever feel like the world is a little too loud? Your laugh makes it feel quieter for me. Thank you for that."* This time, her reply was longer: *"Yes, I feel that way sometimes. Knowing there’s someone out there who notices the small things makes it a little less overwhelming. I wish I could thank you in person."* Ethan’s heart raced as he read her words. He considered revealing himself but wasn’t sure if he was ready. What if she didn’t feel the same way? What if this fragile connection they had built crumbled under the weight of real-life awkwardness? Instead, he decided to do something different. Along with the next note, he left a small, hand-drawn comic strip. It featured a character that looked suspiciously like Lily—hair pulled back, a backpack slung over one shoulder—having a conversation with a cartoon sun. The sun told her jokes, cheered her on, and finally said, “You’re my favorite person in the whole sky.” The next morning, Ethan stood at his usual spot, watching from a distance as Lily discovered the comic. She held it in her hands, her smile growing wider with every panel. Then, to his surprise, she turned and looked around the hallway. Her eyes scanned the crowd as if searching for someone. For a brief moment, Ethan thought about stepping forward. He thought about calling out to her, about finally bridging the gap between them. But his feet stayed rooted to the floor. Instead, he wrote another note: *"One day, I’ll tell you who I am. Until then, I hope these little notes make you smile."* And they did. Each time Lily found a new note, her laughter brightened the hallway, and Ethan knew he was making a difference in her day. But as weeks turned into months, the notes became more than just a habit. They became a lifeline for both of them. Ethan learned that small gestures had the power to create something beautiful, even when words were left unspoken. And Lily learned that kindness could come from unexpected places, often when she needed it most. Their friendship grew quietly, like a flower blooming in secret, each note another petal unfurling. And though Ethan still yearned for something more, he was content to wait. Because some things, he realized, were worth waiting for.
