I woke up in a small, foul-smelling room. My head ached as if it had been struck by something hard.
“Finally, you’re awake, Miss,” my maid, Beatrice, smiled with relief.
“Where am I?”
Her cheerful face instantly turned somber. “You’re in the storage room. You’ve been unconscious for a whole day.”
“Storage room?!” I gasped, holding back a scream. There were plenty of guest rooms, so why had she brought me here?
“Alejandro forbade me from taking you to a guest room. He even refused to give me money when I wanted to take you to the hospital.”
Once again, my heart ached. The man I once loved and saw as my protector had now turned into a demon who wished for my death.
“Don’t worry. I’ll clean this storage room tomorrow so you can sleep comfortably,” Beatrice tried to comfort me.
“No need.” I forced a small smile, hiding my sadness. “I’m leaving today, and I’m never coming back.”
Beatrice grabbed my hand as I tried to stand up. “Please don’t go, Miss. Don’t give up on reclaiming your wealth. You need to take back everything, Mr. Alejandro has stolen from you,” the 30-year-old woman pleaded.
I sighed softly. “I want that too, but... I don’t think it’s worth it, Bea. Mr. Alejandro has already transferred all my father’s wealth into his name. There’s nothing I can do.”
Beatrice was shocked to hear that. She looked at me with pity, but I patted her shoulder gently. “Don’t worry about me.”
I walked toward our bedroom to pack my clothes and belongings, but I accidentally overheard Alejandro talking to someone on the phone inside the room.
“I’d be delighted if you visited our mansion, Mr. Mateo.”
“Mateo?” I froze. Mateo was the main partner at Baxlor Corp. My father and his father were close friends.
I couldn’t believe Alejandro had managed to win him over as well.
‘No wonder Conner Corp has grown so quickly—Mateo must have played a role,’ I murmured softly, disappointed. Baxlor Corp’s success was almost 90 percent due to investment from Ambrose Corp.
Hearing this, my last shred of hope faded. Nothing could bring Alejandro down if Mateo was on his side.
“Alright. I’ll be expecting you tomorrow to discuss our joint project.”
“What?! Mateo’s coming here?” I was stunned. That man rarely attended our family gatherings, even though our fathers were close friends.
The last time I’d seen Mateo was when his father, Roberto, invited us to dinner at their mansion before I married Alejandro.
Alejandro had been so cold, barely returning my friendly smiles, which had made me quite annoyed whenever I saw him. Sometimes, I accused him of looking down on me because he was the heir to Ambrose Corp, the largest company in the world, while I was just the daughter of a businessman who relied on his company.
Of course, I was shocked to hear that Mateo would be visiting our mansion.
Were they really that close, to the point that Mateo was willing to take the time to visit one of his partners? Was the project they were working on so significant that it would bring extraordinary profits to Ambrose Corp?
An idea suddenly flashed through my mind, making me smirk.
If I could persuade Mateo to partner with Baxlor Corp again, I could restore my father’s company’s glory and bring Conner Corp down.
My fists clenched as determination surged through me. Mateo was my only hope for revenge. I wouldn’t waste this opportunity.
I decided to return to my room, but I accidentally bumped into Camilla.
I lifted my chin gracefully and walked past her without saying a word. I had to avoid any confrontation so Alejandro wouldn’t throw me out, ruining my chance to meet Mateo.
Besides, I didn’t want to dirty my hands with her filthy blood. I would take my revenge elegantly. I would show that slut how a respectable woman acts.
“You’re so pathetic, Hannah Baxlor.”
I froze in my tracks at Camilla’s taunt. Though irritated, I didn’t turn to look at her.
“If I were in your position, I wouldn’t lower my dignity by staying in this mansion after my ex-husband kicked me out.”
I turned around and chuckled softly, trying to remain calm. Camilla probably hoped I’d get angry and upset at her taunt.
“If I were you, I wouldn’t lower myself to being a slut just to live a luxurious life.”
Camilla’s face twisted with rage. “You b*tch…!” She swung her hand to slap me, but I instinctively ducked, causing her to slam into the edge of the side table, right in her stomach.
Fresh blood instantly flowed from between her legs.
“Oh, my God!” I rushed to help her up, but she pushed me away.
“Don’t touch me, you witch! I swear I’ll kill you if I lose this baby!”
Camilla was frantic, not out of fear for the baby’s safety but out of fear she’d lose her claim to Alejandro’s wealth.
“Hannah!” That terrifying shout echoed through the room, sending chills down my spine.
SLAP!
I staggered before collapsing to the floor. Pain shot through my cheek.
“How dare you harm Camilla and my unborn child!”
“You’ve got it all wrong!” I scrambled to my feet, panicking as I tried to explain.
“Bullsh*t!” Alejandro snarled. “You’re just jealous of Camilla because she can give me a child, and you can’t, so you want her to lose the baby!”
“Stop slandering me, you bastard! Maybe it’s karma from God for betraying me!” I shouted furiously, unable to control the rage that exploded within me.
It might have sounded cruel. I shouldn’t have cursed the innocent baby in Camilla’s womb. But I was sick of being cornered.
“You…!” Alejandro started toward me, ready to hit me again, but stopped when Camilla groaned in pain.
“Alejandro, stop! My stomach hurts! Take me to the hospital, quickly!”
Alejandro hurriedly scooped her up and was about to leave, but he turned back and glared at me with hatred. “I swear I’ll kill you if anything happens to my baby or my future wife!”
I watched him leave, tears streaming down my face. Why was Alejandro so cruel to me, accusing me of being the villain? They were the ones who had destroyed my life. Even though I hated them, I could never harm an innocent baby.
I crouched down and sobbed uncontrollably. I cried with all my might. Why was God so cruel to me? Why did He take away all my happiness?
He had taken everything from me in just two days!
All the servants watched me cry with sad expressions, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to release the sorrow I couldn’t put into words.
Suddenly, my phone rang. I quickly wiped my tears before answering when I saw it was a call from the hospital.
“What is it?”
“I’m sorry, Miss. But your father has passed away.”
