MINA COULDN'T HEAR anything other than the dripping, splashing and squelching the city was prone to after a deluge of rain. The wailing of snatched souls was silenced. But she also couldn't hear Bee or her unique song of syncopated rain on metal. She paused, and the city seemed to pause with her, as if holding its breath. Except for the drip-drip-drop of water from eaves and overhead lines. One of these drops found its way under her collar and snaked down her back. She glanced around, realizing how deserted the side street was.
