Chapter 8: Statistics
8.1 Introduction to Statistics
Statistics is the branch of mathematics that involves collecting, analyzing, interpreting, presenting, and organizing data. It helps us to make informed decisions based on data.
8.2 Measures of Central Tendency
The three main measures of central tendency are the mean, median, and mode.
Mean: The average of a set of numbers. Add all the numbers and divide by the number of numbers. Mean=∑valuestotal number of valuestext{Mean} = frac{sum text{values}}{text{total number of values}}Mean=total number of values∑values
Median: The middle value in a set of numbers when they are arranged in order.
Mode: The value that occurs most frequently in a set of numbers.
8.3 Range
The range is the difference between the highest and lowest values in a data set.
Range=Maximum value−Minimum valuetext{Range} = text{Maximum value} - text{Minimum value}Range=Maximum value−Minimum valueExercises
Exercise 1: Find the mean, median, and mode of the following data sets:
3, 5, 7, 9, 11
12, 15, 15, 18, 20
4, 6, 7, 8, 8, 10
5, 5, 5, 7, 8, 9
1, 3, 5, 7, 9
Exercise 2: Calculate the range for the following data sets:
10, 15, 20, 25, 30
12, 18, 23, 29, 35
8, 12, 16, 20, 24
3, 5, 7, 10, 12
15, 18, 22, 25, 28
