CHAPTER 9Winter arrived at Llandover Monastery with the biggest snowfall for years that covered the fields and the access from the lands below via the zigzag was all but impassable. In the monastery itself, the inhabitants remained in the warmed up floors where a dozen or more fires burnt mainly coal. Anthony told Kara that even before the monastery was built there had been a coalfield in the area and one of the tunnels beneath the monastery still led to a seam of coal in the hills. There was also a cellar room filled with coal that could last for several years.
"Mind you," he said. "Before your arrival, we never had so many fires burning at once."
