WARNING-This poem does allude to serious topics. If you are uncomfortable with that, you should skip this episode. This poem is a collection of my feelings towards prejudice and discrimination. I came up with it in remembrance of my African American History class. I hope you enjoy it.
You’re a circle and I’m a square
I don’t think I care
You’re perfect as you are, same goes for me
That’s something I wish everyone could see
Sadly, that isn’t the case
We are not defined by our shape
Yet people can only see you as a circle and me as a square
Why do they care
Why can’t they see you for you and me for me
Maybe it’s something in them embedded as deep as the sea
Maybe they were taught to think this way
In school from August to May
Maybe they were in an incident
Making them feel like they need to act like we are dissonant
No matter the reason
No matter the cause
No matter the season
No matter the loss
It does not make it okay
They can’t treat us this way
I hope that one day they can see,
You are you
And I, am me
