I scrambled to my feet, instinctively throwing my body in front of the desk to hide the parchment I had been writing on. The heavy oak door swung open, and Kaelen stepped into the room. He had changed into a dark, simple tunic, but his presence was no less overwhelming. The scent of cedar and rain swept into the room, instantly warring with the heat of the hearth fire and sending a traitorous shiver down my spine.
He carried a tray with a bowl of steaming broth and fresh bread. He placed it on the small table near the hearth, his golden eyes sweeping over my tense posture, immediately noting the way I stood protectively in front of the desk.
"You should eat," Kaelen said, his voice calmer now, though the undercurrent of absolute authority remained. "You ran for hours. Your body needs to recover."
"I don't want your food," I lied, my stomach betraying me with a loud, hollow growl. I braced my hands against the edge of the desk behind me, my fingers brushing the edge of the damp parchment.
Kaelen let out a short, dry breath that might have been a laugh. "Your wolf is wiser than your stubborn pride, little wolf. Eat. I have no desire to keep a starving mate in my fortress."
"I am not your mate," I spat, my voice laced with all the venom I could muster. "A biological spark doesn't make me yours. I belong to no one."
Kaelen's golden eyes darkened, the pupils dilating slightly as my words challenged his Alpha nature. He took a slow step toward me, and my heart hammered against my ribs, but I refused to take a step back. I stood my ground, chin tilted high, baring my throat not in submission, but in open, defiant challenge.
"The bond doesn't lie," Kaelen said softly, stopping just a foot away. The heat radiating from his body was an intoxicating temptation, pulling at the very core of my wolf. "You felt it at the ravine. You feel it now. You can fight me all you want, but your soul recognized mine the moment you crossed the border."
"My soul is my own," I whispered, my voice trembling slightly as his proximity threatened to shatter my resolve. "You Alphas think everything can be claimed, branded, and kept in a cage. Jordan thought the same. He wanted my bloodline to secure his power, and you want the same. You just wrap your chains in silk."
Kaelen's eyes flashed with a sudden, genuine flash of anger. He reached past me, his large hand brushing my hip as he grabbed the edge of the desk. I flinched, scrambling sideways to escape his touch, but his gaze wasn't on me anymore. It was on the parchment I had been trying to hide.
Before I could stop him, Kaelen snatched the paper, his eyes scanning the elegant, hurried script.
To those I leave behind in the embers of the Blood Claw pack...
He read the words silently, his jaw clenching tighter with every line. I watched in mounting panic as his golden eyes tracked my written confession—my absolute refusal to submit to any Alpha, my declaration that I would rather face the deadly wilderness than remain a captive, and my explicit promise to find a way out of his fortress the very first chance I got.
"'Do not look for me,'" Kaelen read aloud, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "'I will have crossed the border... I refuse to be a token exchanged between ruthless Alphas... I am choosing myself.'"
He slowly lowered the paper, his gaze locking onto mine with a cold, terrifying clarity that froze the blood in my veins. "You planned to leave this behind. You intend to run from me."
"Of course I do!" I cried, my anger masking the sudden spike of fear in my chest. "Did you think I would just sit here and wait for you to decide my fate? I am not a guest here, Kaelen. I am a prisoner. And I will do whatever it takes to get my freedom."
Kaelen crumpled the parchment in his fist, his knuckles turning white. The raw power of his aura flared, heavy and suffocating, pressing down on my chest until it was hard to draw a breath. "You think you can survive out there alone? You are an omega. The rogues in the neutral zones would tear you apart in minutes. Jordan's trackers are still skirting our borders, waiting for you to make a mistake. Running from this fortress is suicide."
"Then let me die free!" I shouted back, stepping closer until our chests almost touched. "At least the choices would be mine. I would rather be torn apart by wild beasts than live a life where my only value is what an Alpha decides to do with me."
Kaelen stared down at me, his chest rising and falling in heavy, ragged breaths. The possessive fury in his golden eyes was warring with something deeper, an agonizing conflict between his instinct to command me and his reluctant respect for my fierce, unbroken spirit. For a long, silent moment, the only sound in the room was the crackling of the fire.
"You will not leave this room," Kaelen finally said, his voice dropping to a flat, unyielding tone that brooked no argument. "I will have guards posted outside your door day and night. If you need anything, they will fetch it. But you will not set foot in the corridors. You want to fight your destiny, little wolf? Fine. But you will do it where I can keep you safe."
He turned on his heel, walking toward the door with the crumpled letter still clenched in his hand.
"I will find a way, Kaelen!" I called out after him, my voice cracking with emotion. "The tighter you hold me, the harder I will fight!"
He did not reply. He stepped out of the room, and the heavy door slammed shut, followed by the definitive, chilling sound of the iron bolt sliding into place.
I collapsed against the desk, my hands shaking as the reality of my complete isolation settled over me. I was locked away, my thoughts exposed, and my fated mate now knew exactly how much I detested his protection. I stared at the door, listening to the heavy, synchronized footsteps of two guards taking their positions outside. The cage had closed, and the walls were narrower than ever. But as I stared at the keyhole, a low, urgent murmur of voices drifted through the heavy wood. The guards were whispering about an emergency council meeting. Something had gone wrong at the border, and Kaelen was being summoned to answer for my presence. I pressed my ear to the cold wood, my heart stopping as I heard the word 'treason' whispered in the dark.
