TIDES OF CHANGE

2210 Words
After a long night of intense search in the woods, they didn't find Ethan, but they were able to find two dead bodies. It was a horrific scene for the crews to witness. Those bodies were from one of their search team members. Anger and resentment grew within the heart of each one of them. “Whoever did this must pay," one policeman said. "We must find that bastard and put him in his place!" Another police officer added, "Wrap those bodies and put them together; we must perform an autopsy to reveal the culprit." Ethan woke up to the sounds of birds around him and the smell of blood. He was shocked to find himself naked at a nearby lake. Ethan looked at his hands, blood on his mouth and hands. He couldn't believe his eyes; he was horrified to see this. Thoughts rushed through his mind, trying to figure out what had happened to him last time, but he could hardly remember. Then there was a flash of memory. He was on top of a cliff when he saw light emerge from the forest, and then he saw a group of men searching for something. Then there was a sharp pain in his body, causing him to black out. This memory broke Ethan's heart; he never wanted to kill anyone. And so he quickly ran home and locked all doors and then his room door. His parents were fast asleep, unaware of what was going on. So Ethan put on his shirt and decided to call Emily; he wanted to know if she was okay. After a few rings, she answered his call. “Hey Emily, Emily...?" "Ethan, oh my gosh, how are you? Hope you're good." "Oh, Emily, I'm so glad you're alive." "Emily, please, I know this sounds disappointing, but I might not be able to come to school today. I'm sorry. The reason is that I'm being hunted down, Emily. I can't really remember what happened last night, but I saw people in the woods; they were holding guns and had search crews. That's what I can remember." “Oh, Ethan, yes, you're right about the hunt. Police came to the school to look for you. It seems they are a bit suspicious about you. Ethan, I'm really going to miss you, and I love you so much." "Same to you, Emily. Please know that I love you, and I'll be back for you." "Me too, Ethan." "I guess this is a goodbye for us," Ethan spoke with a somber expression. “No, Ethan, don't say it like that. Don't worry; I'll be back for you, Ethan. I love you." "I love you too, Emily." Emily caught the call, feeling a bit of sadness and anger. After that, she headed straight to school. As she entered the school, she felt alone, scared, and worried. The world felt different now. As she stepped into the school's hallway, she started noticing the students staring at her intensely. She felt intimidated. “Emily," a voice was heard from behind her; it was the principal. "Come with me." Emily followed the principal to her office, feeling a sense of unease. The principal's expression was stern, and Emily knew she was in for a tough time. “Emily, we need to talk about Ethan," the principal said, her voice firm but concerned. "What happened last night? What did he say to you before he vanished?" Emily hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. She didn't want to implicate Ethan or herself. “I don't know, ma'am," Emily said, trying to sound calm. "Ethan just said he had to leave." The principal raised an eyebrow. "That's all? He didn't mention anything about his whereabouts or what was going on?" Emily shook her head. "No, ma'am. He just said he had to leave to the bathroom." The principal sighed. "Emily, the police are investigating a double homicide, and we have reason to believe Ethan might be involved. We need to know what you know." Emily's eyes widened in shock. "Double homicide? I don't know anything about that." The principal leaned forward. "Emily, we're not accusing you of anything, but we need your help. If you know something, anything, that could help us find Ethan, please tell us." Emily felt trapped. She didn't want to betray Ethan's trust, but she also didn't want to get in trouble. “I don't know anything, ma'am," Emily repeated, trying to sound convincing. The principal nodded. "Alright, Emily. You can go back to class now. But if you remember anything, please don't hesitate to come forward.” Emily left the office, feeling relieved but also anxious. She knew she had to be careful, that the principal was watching her. Meanwhile, Ethan was packing his bags, preparing to leave his home behind. He wrote a letter to his parents, telling them about a rare disease, which was obviously not true. Dear Mom and Dad, I'm writing this letter to you with a heavy heart. I have something important to tell you, and it's not easy. I've been diagnosed with a rare contagious disease, and I need to leave home to protect you both. I know this will come as a shock to you, and I'm sorry for the pain and worry this will cause. Please know that I'm doing this to keep you safe. I don't want you to worry about me; I'll be okay. I'll take care of myself and find a way to manage my condition. I'll miss you both so much. You've always been there for me, supporting me, loving me, and guiding me. I'll carry your love and memories with me wherever I go. Thank you for being the best parents in the world. I'm grateful for every moment we've shared, every laugh, every tear, and every adventure. I'll hold onto those memories tightly. I know this might be hard for you to understand, but please trust me. I'm doing this for your safety, and for mine. I'll find a way to make this work, and I'll always be grateful for the love and support you've given me. Take care of yourselves, and don't worry about me. I'll be okay. I love you both more than words can express. With all my love, Ethan As he finished writing, Ethan felt a pang of sadness. He knew he would miss his parents, his friends, and especially Emily. He left the letter on his bed and walked out of his room, closing the door behind him. He took one last look at his home, knowing he might never return. With a heavy heart, Ethan walked into the woods, disappearing into the trees. He knew he had to keep moving, to stay one step ahead of those who were hunting him. Emily walked back to class, she couldn't shake off the feeling that she was being watched and stared at by her colleagues. She glanced around, but there was no one suspicious in sight. She sighed, feeling alone and scared. She missed Ethan already, and she knew she had to find a way to reach out to him, to let him know she was thinking of him. But for now, she had to focus on surviving, on getting through each day without revealing Ethan's secret. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she was determined to protect him, no matter what it took. After the principal's office, Emily walked back to class, feeling a mix of emotions. She was worried about Ethan, but she was also determined to keep his secret safe. As she walked into the classroom, her friends noticed something Emily’s sad face. “Hey, Emily, what's wrong?" Sarah asked, concern etched on her face. Emily smiled weakly. "I'm just stressed out, guys. Don't mind me." But her friends weren't buying it. They knew Emily and Ethan were close, and they could tell something was bothering her. “Come on, Emily, spill the beans," Rachel said, nudging her playfully. "What's going on with you and Ethan?" Emily hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But her friends were persistent, and eventually, she opened up to them. “Guys, I don't know what's going on with Ethan," Emily admitted. "He just disappeared yesterday, and I haven't heard from him since. Well, actually, I did hear from him, but he was really cryptic." She lied. Her friends exchanged worried glances. "That sounds serious," Sarah said. "Do you think he's okay?" Emily nodded. "I think so. He called me earlier and said he loved me, but he didn't say where he was or what was going on." Rachel frowned. "That sounds really suspicious. Do you think the police are looking for him?" Emily nodded again. "Yeah, they are. The principal just questioned me about him." Her friends nodded sympathetically. "We're here for you, Emily," Sarah said. "We'll support you no matter what." As they talked, Emily felt a weight lift off her shoulders. She was grateful for her friends, who were always there for her. Throughout the day, Emily's friends were supportive and fun, distracting her from her worries about Ethan. They joked and laughed together, and for a few hours, Emily forgot about her troubles. At lunchtime, they sat together in the cafeteria, chatting and giggling. Emily felt like herself again, thanks to her friends. "Thanks, guys," Emily said, smiling at her friends. "You always know how to make me feel better." Sarah grinned. "That's what friends are for." As they finished lunch, Emily's phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen, her heart skipping a beat. “Is it Ethan?" Rachel asked, noticing Emily's expression. Emily nodded, her eyes scanning the message. "Yeah, it's him. He's telling me to be careful and that he loves me." Her friends blushed. “Awwwwn…that's so sweet," Sarah said. "But be careful, Emily. If the police are looking for him, you don't know what might happen." Emily fluttered but also nodded, feeling a shiver run down her spine. She knew her friends were right, but she couldn't help feeling drawn to Ethan, no matter what dangers lay ahead. As the day went on, Emily couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. She knew she had to be careful, but she also knew she couldn't abandon Ethan, not now, not ever. The school day finally ended, and Emily headed home, lost in thought. She couldn't stop thinking about Ethan and what might happen to him. As she walked through the door, her mom greeted her with a warm smile. “Hey, sweetie, how was your day?" Emily shrugged, feeling a mix of emotions. "It was okay, I guess." Her mom noticed something was wrong and asked, "Emily, is everything alright? You seem a bit distracted." Emily hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But she knew she couldn't keep everything bottled up inside. “Mom, I need to talk to you about something," Emily said, her voice barely above a whisper. Her mom's expression turned concerned. "What is it, sweetie? You can tell me anything." Emily took a deep breath and began to explain, leaving out the most incriminating details. "It's about Ethan. He's going missing, and I think he's in trouble. The police are looking for him, and I'm worried about him." Her mom's expression softened. "Oh, Emily, I'm so sorry. That must be really tough for you.” Emily nodded, feeling a lump form in her throat. "I just don't know what to do, Mom. I feel like I'm losing him, and I don't know how to help him." Her mom wrapped her in a warm hug. "We'll figure it out together, sweetie. We'll do whatever it takes to help Ethan and keep you safe.” As they hugged, Emily felt a sense of comfort wash over her. She knew she wasn't alone, and that with her mom's support, she could face whatever lay ahead. Meanwhile, Ethan continued his journey, navigating through the woods and avoiding detection. He knew he had to keep moving, to stay one step ahead of those who were hunting him. But as the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the forest, Ethan couldn't shake off the feeling that he was being watched. He quickened his pace, his senses on high alert. Suddenly, he heard a rustling in the bushes. Ethan spun around, his heart racing. And then, he saw her - Emily, standing in front of him, a look of determination on her face. “Ethan," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I had to find you. I had to make sure you're okay." Ethan's eyes locked onto hers, filled with a mix of surprise and gratitude. “Emily," he whispered back, his voice filled with emotion. "You shouldn't be here. It's not safe." Emily took a step closer, her eyes shining with tears. "I don't care about safety, Ethan. I care about you. And I'll do whatever it takes to help you." As they stood there, locked in a moment of pure connection, Ethan knew that he wasn't alone. He had Emily, and together, they could face whatever lay ahead. But little did they know, they were being watched, and their fate was about to take a dramatic turn...
