When the door burst open and Jax lunged, I thought he would reach me. For a second, I truly believed it. Then the world shifted. A hand clamped over my mouth from behind. The scent hit me first with bitter herbs and something metallic that burned the back of my throat. I tried to bite, to claw, to shift, but my body betrayed me. My wolf snarled, furious, but my limbs went heavy. The last thing I saw was Jax’s face as he tore forward, eyes blazing, just before the wall between us slammed down like iron. Darkness swallowed me. When I woke, it was too cold to stone beneath my cheek. I didn’t move immediately. I listened. Dripping water somewhere to my left. A faint hum of energy in the air. No pack scent. No forest. No moonlight. Just stone and silence. I rolled onto my back slowly.
