Chapter One: The Hunter's Target

1457 Words
Lucien leaned against the window of his sparse, dimly-lit apartment, eyes scanning the rain-soaked street below. The only sounds were the faint hum of the city’s underbelly and the rhythmic tapping of the rain against the glass. He had just finished cleaning his weapons, meticulously ensuring each piece was pristine, even though he’d never had to question their reliability. It was a habit, a part of the job that gave him control when everything else was chaotic. Mercenaries weren’t supposed to have emotions. Not when they worked for the highest bidder. Not when they lived by the code of survival at any cost. But this mission was different. This job was different. Aiden Leclair wasn’t just another target. He wasn’t some high-ranking criminal who could be taken out with a well-placed bullet or a knife through the throat. No, Aiden was different. He was the head of a dangerous Mafia syndicate—a man whose reach extended far beyond what any of his competitors knew. There were whispers about him, rumors that made Lucien uneasy in a way he couldn’t articulate. Some said Aiden could control people with nothing more than a glance. Others claimed he could make anyone do anything, even without raising a finger. Lucien had never been the type to believe in myths, but the man’s reputation was enough to make him pause. The job had come to him through an anonymous employer—simple, clean, and no questions asked. Take out Aiden Leclair. No backstory, no personal vendettas, just cold, hard cash. It was the kind of job Lucien had done a hundred times before. Yet, something gnawed at the back of his mind, a feeling that the moment he accepted this job, the rules had changed. His phone buzzed, pulling him from his thoughts. A message from his employer, confirming the location and time of the meet-up. A dingy warehouse on the outskirts of town, an old building that smelled of mildew and decay. It was as though they were trying to make the place as grim as the people who frequented it. He sighed, stood up from the window, and grabbed his gear. It was time to work. Time to take down the man who had haunted his thoughts for far too long. --- The drive to the warehouse was uneventful. The rain hadn’t let up, and the streets were empty, as though the city itself knew something was about to unfold. Lucien parked his motorcycle a few blocks away, careful to keep his approach subtle. He wasn’t the only one who knew about this meet-up—if Aiden’s reputation was anything to go by, he’d be ready for an ambush. As Lucien approached the building on foot, he surveyed the area, his instincts sharp, his senses heightened. Everything was eerily quiet. The only sounds came from the steady patter of rain hitting the ground, and the occasional distant car. The place reeked of neglect, but Lucien wasn’t here to admire the architecture. He was here to eliminate the most dangerous man in the city. Inside the warehouse, shadows seemed to shift, moving just beyond his vision. He felt eyes on him—sharp, watchful. Lucien moved carefully, each step calculated. This wasn’t just about the kill; this was about proving that he was in control. The very idea that Aiden could be waiting for him unsettled him. It meant Aiden was a step ahead, and Lucien wasn’t used to that. Finally, he heard it—footsteps, slow and deliberate. The figure emerged from the shadows, tall and imposing. Lucien’s heart skipped a beat. Aiden Leclair. His first impression was of a man who seemed to defy every expectation. Aiden was stunningly handsome, with striking blue eyes that held flecks of gray, like storm clouds about to break. His face was chiseled, sharp—an artist’s rendering of what a man should look like. His presence was magnetic, drawing Lucien’s gaze even when he wanted to look away. But it wasn’t just his appearance that left Lucien on edge. It was the way he moved—calm, confident, as if he owned not just the room, but everything around it. Aiden Leclair wasn’t just a Mafia boss. He was a predator. Lucien’s fingers tightened around the grip of his gun, but he made no move to pull it out. Aiden’s lips curled into a smile, and the sound of his voice sent a shiver down Lucien’s spine. “You must be Lucien. I’ve been waiting for you.” Lucien didn’t respond immediately. His eyes narrowed as he assessed the man before him. “What’s this about, Leclair? You know why I’m here.” Aiden’s smile widened, though there was no warmth in it. “Of course I do. You’re here to kill me. But I wonder… why?” His voice was soft, almost conversational, but the underlying menace was unmistakable. Lucien’s gaze flickered, and for a moment, he wasn’t sure how to respond. Aiden was reading him, picking apart his thoughts before Lucien could even form them. It was unsettling. “I’m just here for the job,” Lucien said, keeping his voice steady. “Nothing personal. You’re just in my way.” Aiden tilted his head, studying Lucien with an intensity that felt as though he could see into his very soul. “Nothing personal, huh? That’s funny. Because the way I see it, Lucien, this is very personal. You see, I don’t think you’ve realized yet, but you’re already caught in my web.” Lucien tensed, his grip tightening around the gun once more. Aiden was toying with him, trying to get under his skin. And for a brief moment, Lucien felt it—this overwhelming, suffocating pull. Aiden’s presence was magnetic, consuming. Aiden took a step closer, his gaze never leaving Lucien’s. “You think you can kill me? Do you think I don’t know who you are? How many times have you worked for people like me? The shadows, the deals, the dirty work. But you don’t know me, Lucien. You don’t know what I’m capable of.” Lucien’s heart skipped a beat. There it was again. That sense of unease. “I’ve killed men like you before.” Aiden’s smile deepened, though his eyes remained cold. “I’m not like any man you’ve killed before. I’ve been watching you, Lucien. Long before you even knew I existed. You think you’re in control? That you’re the hunter?” He stepped forward, and Lucien instinctively took a step back. “You’re not the hunter here. You’re the prey.” The words hit Lucien like a blow to the chest. The audacity, the arrogance—Aiden wasn’t just speaking; he was claiming Lucien in a way that unsettled him. For the first time, Lucien felt a flicker of doubt. Could he really kill this man? This was no ordinary target. This was a man who controlled everything, who was never caught off guard. And worse, Aiden seemed to know him better than he knew himself. Lucien recovered quickly, though. He couldn’t let Aiden see the effect he was having. “I’m not your prey, Leclair. And you won’t be the one walking away from this.” Aiden’s gaze darkened, and for a moment, the air between them seemed to grow thicker, suffocating. “We’ll see about that.” Before Lucien could react, Aiden moved with lightning speed, disarming him with a single fluid motion. The gun clattered to the ground, useless. Lucien’s breath caught in his throat. Aiden had taken control—just like that. But Aiden didn’t move to strike. Instead, he simply stood there, close enough for Lucien to feel the heat radiating off his body. His hand lingered near Lucien’s waist, and Lucien’s pulse quickened. “I could end you right now, Lucien,” Aiden whispered, his breath warm against Lucien’s ear. “But I’m not going to. Not yet. I want to see what you do next.” The words hung in the air, thick with a promise of danger. Lucien’s mind raced, but his body betrayed him, frozen under Aiden’s gaze. He had never felt this exposed, this vulnerable. And yet, beneath the fear, there was something else—a strange pull. Aiden pulled away, his fingers brushing against Lucien’s chest before he stepped back, his smile now more dangerous than ever. “You’re mine now,” he said, the words a command. “And I’m not letting you go. Not until I’m done with you.” Lucien swallowed, his chest tight. This wasn’t just a job anymore. Aiden wasn’t just another target. He was something much worse. And Lucien had just become part of a game he hadn’t even known he was playing
