Chapter 2: Him "Don't lie to her Aphrodite" a deep voice like silk said from behind us. I turned to see who was talking and looked at my new friend Lynn who was fuming questioning her with my eyes. When I finally turned and caught sight of the boy who had spoke. He was amazing. Tall much taller than my 5' 6" with an olive complexion and dark brown almost blank hair. And his eyes were the most brilliant blue I had ever seen. It was like looking into the Carabian sea. (Not that I have ever seen anything aside from pictures. Heck I've never even left Missouri.) The breath caught in my throat and I know I turned the color or a ripe tomato. "I'm not lieing Darrian." Lynn broke through my own self sabotage (I was stairing). I looked from one to the other he was smirking evily at her. "Oh yeah?" He replied coolly "then tell her your name." Again I looked at her with a question in my eyes. Her face went red "my name IS Lynn" she said getting angry with the boy whose name I guessed was Darrian. He turned to me "her name is Aphrodite." He said before turning and walking away. I was so confused. I turned to Aphrodite/ Lynn "what the hell is going on?" She sighed and looked at the ground "my name is Aphrodite Lynn Taft. I hate my first name so I go by Lynn." She explained. "Oh. Ok well that's not a lie then" I laughed as relief flooded through her face. She smiled and took my arm as we got our food and sat down. I sat so that I could look at the guy who was sitting two tables away from us he was talking with a bunch of kids then a short, chubby blond walked over to him and he slipped his arm around her and my heart fell. He had a girlfriend. I went back to eating while Lynn talked nonstop. Then she asked me something no one had ever asked me. "Can I come spend the night at your place some time we could have a sleep over?" She saw my surprise and in a breathless stream "ImeanIdonthavetoitstotallyokijustthoughticouldgiveyouamakeoverandwewouldhavefun" this was something I came to call the Lynn babble. She was talking so fast I barely understood her. I stopped her there by putting my hand over her's. "I would live that but I have to ask my mom maybe Sunday. Give me your number and I'll call and let you know." After church I walked home smiling the whole way. I had a new friend, and a new crush. Unfortunately he was taken but I could still try to be his friend right? I walked in the door and went straight to my room. It was safer to do that. At dinnertime my mom knocked on my door. I came out and sat at the table opposite my mom playing with my food for a moment. "Hey mom?" I said tentatively. She looked at me coldly almost looking right through me. "I was wondering if I could have a friend over Sunday night." I paused fearing her answer. She sighed exasperated "I suppose. But you get your room, the kitchen, and the living room unpacked before she gets her or else" she left her statement there I know what or else was. That night I called Lynn and told her the good news. She was so excited "I cant wait! I'm gonna bring some clothes for you and we can do your hair and makeup and make you look so cute!" She said in an endless stream of Lynn babble. I smiled "yeah it'll be great but I dont have any makeup." I said a little worried she laughed. "That's ok I can bring mine. Do you have a hair straightener?" She questioned. I stayed quiet afraid to tell her that I didn't. "Amanda? Did I lose you?" "I'm here. No, I dont have a hair straightener. I'm sorry I guess this sleep over isn't gonna be too much fun after all." I sighed rethinking the whole thing. She laughed. "Dont worry I have everything we need I'll bring it all. No prob." I sighed in relief "Thank you Lynn." Sunday finally came I met Lynn at church and saw Darrian looking extremely sad. Church had ended and Lynn had gone to collect her thing. Darrian was sitting in one of the church pews near the front. I walked so that I was standing almost behind him and peered over his shoulder. He was drawing, he had drawn a heart that was being torn apart by two hands and a face in the background crying. I hadn't noticed that I had learned over so far my chin was nearly resting on his shoulder. "Its rude to read over someone's shoulder." His voice startled me out of my awe at his talent. I stood up quickly and studdered "I... I'm sorry. I was coming over to make sure you are ok." My face turned a bight red as I continued "you looked so sad. I didn't mean to interrupt." I stood there awkwardly for a moment fidgeting with the sleeves of my hoodie. "I'm fine. Lindsey dumped me so there's that." He said turning to meet my eyes. I swear his eyes pierced my soul. "I...I'm so sorry." I stumbled over my words again feeling nervous under his gaze. He shrugged Lynn came running up to me then "you ready?" She said giving me a quizzical look. I nodded and said a quick goodbye to Darrian and then we left. "What was that about?" Lynn asked when we were outside, there were a few people getting into their cars to leave. I shrugged "he seems cool" I replied trying not to meet her eyes. "Oh my god!" She yelled it so loud that I jumped and my eyes went wide. "You LIKE him!" She said again in her too loud voice realization hitting her hard apparently. "Do not!" I said loud enough for everyone who was now staring at us, then I grabbed her arm and pulled her with me around the side of the building. "What are you doing?!? I dont want people to know. He wouldnt go for me anyways I mean look at me!" I gestured down to my appearance. Lynn's eyebrows shot up so fast I thought they would fly off her face "That's what you're worried about? That you're not pretty enough?" Her expression changed into a sly smirk as she took me in for what seemed like the first time. "I can change that. Let's go." She grabbed my hand and pulled me back around the building as we got in the van with the church name plaster on it, our transportation home, all the while my thoughts hopeful that Darrian would notice me. All the while my thoughts of him.
