Matilda chuckled darkly, her expression impassive. "By all means, give it your best shot." She said, her lips curling into a taunting smirk. "It won't make a lick of difference."
Cardi clenched her fist, glaring hard and long at her. "I will have the laugh last when I'm eventually the only one by Arthur's side. And that is soon!"
Matilda turned and walked into what used to be her room, half closing the door. She was going to pack her stuffs and leave. Her mood was totally ruined by her evil cousin.
While packing her belongings into a suitcase, her phone rang. The caller ID revealed a familiar name. It was her best friend calling.
"The parcel I ordered for you arrived today, why did you reject it?" Ariana inquired.
Matilda was stunned. "Ah, it was refused?"
"The customer service said that someone called Caroline asked for it to be returned. Who is she?"
A deep frown was etched on Matilda's face. "My husband's twin sister. I met her for the first time ever today. She is incredibly annoying."
Ariana chuckled darkly. "You just got married to Arthur and she is already staying with you guys? I bet she'd make life difficult for you in the future."
Matilda knew that was the truth, but there was nothing she could do. "My mother-in-law is already asking that I should continue Arthur's bloodline. That narcissistic man gave me tons of rules. And not making s****l advances at him tops the list."
As she rounded a corner of her room, she caught the glimpse of her foster mother's face peeking around the door frame.
Matilda stopped in her tracks, bringing the phone down from her ear before swiping at the screen, ending the call. She knew her mother was eavesdropping on her and the thought of it, irriated her to the core.
"Mom!" She said icily. "You are really crossing the line."
"Don't be so melodramatic." Mrs Walton said in a sickly sweet voice. "It's not like I was spying on you. I was simply... curious."
"Curious?" Matilda scoffed.
"I heard what you said on the phone," Mrs Walton said, her eyes fixed on her foster daughter. "About how your mother-in-law wants you to have a child."
Matilda's stomach twisted into knots. This was the exact reason why she was upset that her foster mother had listened to her conversation with her best friend- Ariana.
"I was just venting my frustrations. I'm not actually considering..."
Mrs Walton cut her off, her voice firm and unyielding. "You have a duty to your husband and his family. You must give him a child!"
Matilda took in a deep breathe. "I can't even do that if I want." Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"You must find a way of continuing his bloodline." Her foster mother insisted. "You're a pretty, irresistible woman. It's only a man with s****l dysfunction that can not want you!"
"You cannot force me to get pregnant for that egoistic devil. I also have my own career to pursue."
"You have no choice, Matilda." Mrs Walton ignored her words. "You should know that you will inherit Arthur's estate in the future, if you have his child. We'd never be this miserable, again!"
"It is too early to talk so seriously about this, mother. I'm leaving." Matilda grabbed her suitcase and walked out.
Matilda returned back to Arthur's mansion, half an hour later. It was only then that she realized how much time she had spent at her foster parents' home.
"Caroline," Matilda tried to hold in her rage when she got into the living room, only to find her sister-in-law who had a bag of pop corn in one hand and the remote in the other, engrossed in the latest action blockbuster. "Why did you reject my package?"
Caroline barely glanced in her direction, her eyes fixed on the screen.
"I can't believe you're ignoring me and watching a movie while I'm trying to talk to you!" Matilda's frustration reached a crescendo.
"I saw that in your closest you have so many clothes already. So I returned it to save my brother's money." Caroline stated, finally sparing her a glance.
Matilda chuckled darkly. She could not believe her ears. "How daring of you to think Arthur would spend a dime on me, when we just got married yesterday. Your brother would never do that even if I asked. That package was from my best friend! But you just assumed it was from him and sent it back without even asking me."
"Maybe I should be sorry for saving Arthur's ass from a gold digger like you!" Caroline's voice was dripping in sarcasm. "Pretend all you want, but I know your type."
Matilda's jaw slackened in shock. Hearing that from Caroline was totally unexpected and she didn't know what to retort.
Shockingly, Caroline raised her hand and striked her own cheek so hard. The sound drowned even the violent sounds emanating from the TV.
"What-"
Matilda was cut off when Arthur strided just then into the living room. He beheld his twin sister holding her right cheek as tears flooded her eyes.
It was only then that it dawned on Matilda what Caroline had done.
"You're so vicious! My sister is in a wheelchair and you have the nerve to bully her. Don't you know she is fragile?" Arthur glared coldly at her.
"I didn't slap her. We were only talking and suddenly she slapped herself."
"How dare you insinuate that Caroline is mentally ill? She would never hurt herself, so watch your mouth!" He harshly chided.
"Don't scold her, Arthur. I should apologize to her for agonizing her with my presence." Caroline sniffed back at her tears.
"If she thinks your presence in this house is agonizing then let her forever be agonized, because you're not leaving." Arthur deadpanned.
Matilda's voice trembled in anger. "Listen Arthur, I didn't do it. I am your wife! Why can't you believe me?"
"You have to apologize to Caroline now." Arthur said in a deep, commanding voice.
As they argued, Matilda's eyes caught sight of a crimson stain which marred his pristine white shirt. It was distinctive shape, the unmistakable mark of a lipstick kiss.
Her eyes narrowed as she suddenly glared at Arthur, her voice sharp and accusing.
"There is lipstick on your shirt." She ignored his words as she pointed at the offending stain. "Care to explain how that got there?"
Arthur followed her gaze, his face expressionless. "It happens while socializing. It is nothing." His tone was dismissive.
Matilda's eyes blazed with jealousy and rage. "You expect me to believe that?"
Arthur liked her feisty side. "Sadly, that is up to you."
He stormed out of the living room, leaving Matilda with her sister-in-law. She couldn't stand Caroline so she left as well.
Pushing upon their bedroom door, Matilda saw a figure that got her momentarily dumbfounded.
It was Arthur shamelessly naked. His lips were slightly curved with evil intention. There was no hiding or holding back. Everything was there for her view.
Would she be able to conceal her desire?
Matilda's heart was beating fast and hard. She was short of breath. "Do you think you can seal my lips by doing... this?"
The very thought that Arthur must have spent time with her cousin- Cardi made her feel greatly hurt.
Arthur casually wrapped a towel around his waist as he strided towards Matilda who kept taking a step backwards, till her back hit the wall behind her.
He was only an inch away from her. Instinctively, her lips parted and her eyes fluttered shut.
Arthur chuckled darkly. He held the back of Matilda's neck and crashed his lips against hers. Their tongues carelessly danced and Matilda moaned in his mouth. Her body shuddered in pleasure. It felt so good.
Arthur suddenly pulled away, leaving Matilda completely out of breath.
"Why don't you want me? Is it that you have no libido?" She asked, her mind going back to what her foster mother had said.
Arthur raised a shocked brow at her. "Are you that desperate to be loved? Do you think having my child will make me love you?!" He asked in a hoarse voice.
"I don't recall mentioning that." Matilda swallowed hard.
"Did your mother not ask that by all means, you should have a child for me?" His tone was condescending.
"It is not what you think, Arthur." She suddenly felt clumsy. "She-"
His electric blue eyes glared at her furiously. "If you ever get pregnant with my child," He said icily. "I'll kill it with my own hands."
Matilda's entire body went cold.
