Chapter 46

694 Words

Auren POV “You can sleep in the bed. It’s big enough. I bet you won’t even notice me in it,” Lorien murmured as she passed me to climb onto her side of the mattress. Her head was bowed, but the faint pink in her cheeks betrayed her. I doubted that very much. “All right,” I said, and she looked up at me in surprised relief before turning back and sliding under the covers. My back, always stiff from sleeping on the floor, welcomed the soft give of a mattress. I’d get used to this. I wanted to get used to this. I hurried to the bathroom, rinsed off, dressed, and returned. Lorien had her back to me breathing slow and even but I could feel the rhythm of her heart thudding like a drum beneath the sheets. She wasn’t the only one tense. People shared beds all the time with nothing happening.
