Chapter Seven: DisappointmentIona sat on the rock, her knees tucked up under her chin. She couldn't sleep. In the hollow below her, the rest of the party were clustered together for warmth. She knew Jacob was up the tree in front of her, but she could barely make him out, just the occasional flash of his arrow tip in the moonlight. Anthony was crouched under a bush on the other side of her but she knew better than to look for him. She was exhausted deep to the pit of her stomach, but she doubted she would get any rest tonight. Every time she closed her eyes, she could see that face looking back at her: the cold, endless eyes staring into hers, the clammy pallid flesh bearing earth elf markings uncannily like her sisters, thick sodden strands of dark hair hanging across the lifeless face.
