2. Deadly grounds.

886 Words
The beautiful sound of chirping birds and singing frogs is like music to my ears. I sigh happily, feeling my shoulders sag in relief as the burden of dealing with my selfish crazy sister and a weak father that enables her fades away. It started fading away the very moment I stepped foot into the forest. It was the beginning of a new day for me. I love Jenny so much, but she can be such a pain in the ass and I cannot deal with her this morning. I was only too happy to come out into the marshes and fetch my father his beloved herbs. He brews the herbs and takes it as tea. He brags about how he loves drinking tea from the root straight up and how it helps with his toothache. The wind wafts through my hair, around my nape and down my body like a caress. It feels really nice, the sky is blue and bright, it is a mildly sunny day. My werewolf senses are aware of the tiny furry animals scurrying across the forest floor, the monkeys in the trees hooting and calling to one another. Letting their tribe know that a predator has just entered their land. I shake my head and hide my snicker. I am faster than the average human being, stronger and my sense of smell is sharper than the average mammal. It can be likened to that of a hunter cat. The wolf is a deadly animal that can catch the scent of his prey from miles away. I am a cross-breed mutated mix of human and hunter genes. But I have not transformed to my wolf yet. Part of being a shape-shifter is that I can switch forms between the human body and the wolf form on all fours with fangs and furs. This is the gift and curse from the moon goddess and, over the centuries and the course of human history, my kind has adapted, we have learned, and we have accepted our creation as a blessing not necessarily a curse. We are the best of both worlds and like any superior species, we have survived and thrived doing it. Although we keep our world separate from humans, we have learned to co-exist with them, to tolerate them but not underestimate them. If only the animals keeping their distance know that I am far from a hunter… yet. I am one more of less like they are. Prey. I am not as tall as most girls my age. Jenny is three years older than me and looking at both of us standing side by side you would think she was eight years older than me. Jenny is thinner and has a willowy and graceful figure as Madam Therese, our conduct teacher, praised her as she delivered a serenade during the Romeo and Juliet Play, Werewolf lore. Apparently, Madame Therese was so wowed by her she was moved to tears. I am more on the more buxom side. I do not have small boobs and slim hips. I have a fuller figure, my boobs are bigger, so close to double D cups, my hips are full and plump. I always hide in big hoodies and shorts or long pants but during the hot summer days I cannot wear thick clothes because of the heat and I have to hide out in the forest or in my room for hours. Arrghh that is pure torture. Jenny looks like mother. I see her portrait every morning when I wake up. They have the same slim figure, tall and beautiful. I took her smile. We have the same welcoming beautiful smile. Jenny looks more like dad with his coloring while I took mother's snowy white complexion. Sometimes, I wish I was her in a carefree way. We are just so different and the older I get it is more difficult to hide. Pushing through the branches, batting away buzzing flies, they continue down the path that looks to be overgrowing with bushes. The spring days bring steady rainfall. I walk down that path till I reach a big oak tree. It is so big the trunks are growing out of the ground and wrapping the tentacles around a smaller tree close by. It is very hard to miss. I reach there and turn to my left, lifting a few huge branches out of the way to reveal another smaller beaten-up path. I leave the main path and take this other smaller one. Clutching my bag close, I bend till I come into a clearer path. I continue till I reach my destination. It is a mini enclave. How did I discover this place? My father brought me here a couple of times and never brought me here again. I discovered this place randomly on one of my many strolls and since that day I have always come here. It is just purely coincidental that father asks me to fetch him the roots for his herbal tea and it happens to grow here. We call this place the marshes. Scary deep waters, surrounded by shallow ground and unstable land. The gators and large snakes in these waters make me more guarded as I walk through the waters. The plan is a quick grab and dash.
