ISLA
The next day, I had to choose the most lengthy uniform to cover the scars on my skin, the old ones that is. The new ones mother made had magically disappeared, it could only mean one thing, that stranger’s blood was working.
“How’d you get that?” A smaller brunette asked, pointing to a bruise on my lower thigh.
My chest clamped “It’s nothing” I covered it up with my hands since the skirt couldn’t conceal it, just as I had been doing for a while.
“Just get a pair of pants instead, they’ll cover up nicely” a faint smile formed on her lips “What size are you, I’ll help you get them” her curls falling short just above her shoulders.
“Thanks, I’m Isla” I stretched my hand towards her.
“Harriet” she took my palm in hers “Now let’s get you pants”
After the fitting for the uniforms, I felt better in pants than in a skirt but it didn’t matter, the moment my eyes caught sight of him, I felt uneasy once again.
“Don’t look at his face” Harriet whispered “He’s the wrong person to be around” just then, he walked past us, thankfully with a crowd of people around him, shielding his sight from getting me.
“Why? Is he who I think he is?” I asked, taking out my books from my locker.
“Zane Byers, yes he is, he’s the son of Alpha King Darius Byers” she informed me, taking her books as well “He rules the school, the way his father rules the packs”
“Well, I’ll do what I can to avoid him” I said and she took my hand in hers, then the bell rang “It’s time for class” she giggled and I found myself smiling along.
The next class was defense combat, apparently, no need for books. I had seen the name of the professor etched on the side of the door. “Kael Valerion” I mumbled softly, the name felt familiar in my mind, yet, I couldn’t understand where I had seen it.
“Oh, he’s the hottest professor we have here, so I heard” Harriet responded “Come on, let’s grab a seat” I followed her, taking seats a bit far away from the large space they called the ‘fight arena’
“So..how does this work?” I asked when the voices of chattering and gasps got louder by the minute.
“Oh, they partner us up with seniors who will be our defense guides and sparring partners” she answered with a pause, pulling out her phone and staring at the time “It’s almost time for him to be here” she giggled, her feet tapping the floor more aggressively.
“For who to be here?” I asked
“Good morning students” a feminine voice came from the end of the room. It was a rather petite woman with lustrous black hair.
“Mr Valerion will be running a bit late, so I’ll take on the first batch of student pairs” she announced and almost immediately there was a loud groan from the students. A little bit obvious that they didn’t like her.
“And so, let us begin!” She yelled.
The first batch was called and Harriet stood in the podium with her senior, an older guy with golden eyes and a charming smile.
Lucky!
Whilst I sat waiting for my turn which would be in the next thirty minutes, I noticed the senior sparring with Harriet looking at me, glancing subtly as though I was meant to take a hint, of course I checked behind me to see if I was mistaken, I wasn’t but I tried not to let it bother me.
I watched as they moved swiftly, the seniors slamming their juniors to the ground like they were elder siblings fighting their younger ones.
Harriet got slammed so many times, I prayed her back wouldn’t shatter from impact but she smiled each time, maybe she enjoyed it, I didn’t, although it was nothing compared to what I would always face at home.
After the minutes had passed, they sent them to get changed and get seated for batch two, she sat down next to me “So how’d I do?”
“Great, you really did well” I tugged her arm and she winced in pain “But you took a lot of damage, sorry” she only smiled at me and I did the same.
“Let’s pray to the goddess you get a great senior” she crossed her fingers with a wide smile, I didn’t care to do the same, luck wasn’t really my thing and neither were prayers.
They started the name calling from the floating screen and then it got to mine “Isla Belmont..” the lady hesitated and then the second name popped up “Zane Byers”
“Oh goddess!” Harriet squealed, I covered her mouth with my palm, muffling her voice.
He walked out in the arena, slipping out of his leather jacket, his golden amber eyes holding my gaze. I felt my palm moisten from sweat.
“You and me little wolf, come on out” he said loudly, grabbing my attention.
With shaky breaths, I stood up, got into the changing room and had my pants changed to a black pair of joggers.
You can do this Isla
After taking a few ragged breaths, I made my way out to the arena when the crowd started its uproar once again and I heard a familiar voice from behind me.
“Sorry I’m late” he said “Had a bit of a meeting” I turned to look and there he was, his lengthy blonde hair put up in a bun, his light grey eyes piercing through mine, the body-con shirt making him stand bigger than he looked.
Oh goddess, what have I done?
“Zane Byers” a smirk tugged at the corner of his lips “And Isla Belmont, let’s see what you’re capable of” he walked past us and I felt my heart race.
“Good morning students, if you didn’t know, I’m Kael and I’m your professor for the defensive arts” he looked at the other professor, relieving her of her duty and then down to me, his expression almost bland but mischievous “You may now begin”
And with a racing heart, I bowed slightly to my senior and opponent, swallowing hard as I would be fighting in front of my professor, Kael Valerion, who turns out to be the stranger from yesterday, my contract mate.
