ISLA
After class, I made my way towards the exit, so much as I hated home, it was free of all these faces and filled with the familiar demons.
“Isla, I’m sorry” Harriet rushed towards me with ragged breathing “I didn’t mean to leave you alone” she begged.
“Yet you did” I gruntled “I’m going home now, no need to plead for forgiveness”
“You’re not going anywhere” Zane said with a stern expression on his face “We’re not done talking!” He took hold of my hand without my consent.
“Let go of me Zane!” I retorted, prying my arm from his grip but he wouldn’t budge, his grasp was quite rigid and I fought it until we got to the nurse’s office.
“Why are we here?” I questioned him “What are you doing?!” He didn’t respond , brought on a kit and settled it in front of me.
“You got injured severely, you’re meant to be at the nurse’s office” he finally spoke, his voice low and commanding. I put my knuckles out of sight “Hiding them is futile” he informed me.
“Why do you care?” I asked, opening the kit and helping myself to some band aids.
“I don’t, all I’m thinking about is the paired tournament games” he folded his arms, watching me like he was some babysitter watching the damned kid.
“So?”
“So, I’ve noticed that you’re not in great shape, you look you’ll die in minutes....” he pointed to my knuckles and the bruise on my arm that I tried so hard to cover with a bandanna and my pale face “Not just your knuckles little wolf” he walked closer and I pulled back.
“What are you doing?” My heart raced at the proximity to my face, upclose, I could see his eyes flicker with a bit of dark red and his lashes looked longer than mine.
“These” he lifted a part of my shirt where there were dark bruises still lingering on them “What kind of wolf gets bruised like that and it doesn’t heal completely?” He asked, I could guess that it was rhetorical.
I pulled my shirt down and heaved against his chest “I don’t have to answer to you, Byers, just leave me alone!” I walked out, when he tried to take hold of my arm once again.
“No one walks out on me, Isla”
“But you also can’t grab her like that” Kael ordered, jabbing at Zane’s side and he let go of me without hesitation “What are you still doing here Byers? Don’t you have football practice?” He raised a brow.
“See you soon, little wolf” he walked past us.
I could finally let out a sigh of relief or so I thought “You can’t be around other Alphas like that” Kael started, his body cornering me to the wall, his scent of cheddar and sweet oak sifting through my nostrils.
“Professor Kael, who really are you?” He didn’t respond “First, you find a cure to my problem, then you’re my defense professor” I paused because it all started to make sense “That’s how you knew my name at the cottage, you’ve been watching me” I announced when he closed the distance between us, covering my mouth with his palm.
“The walls have ears Isla” he whispered, leaning against my ear, his warm breath touching my neck “If you want this to stay a secret, then I advise that you don’t say it aloud”
He pulled away from me “And don’t forget, the first full moon is tonight, don’t be late” his fingers grazed my skin as he walked past me, causing my body to quiver. I couldn’t say a thing. One hand was my sparring partner Zane and the other professor Kael, my contract mate, who if any one finds out about the truth, I’d be exiled, oh goddess, what do I do?
I made my way straight for home, as much as it was a hassle to put up with Belle, I’d rather take a whip right now than have to face Zane or any other Byers at the moment.
“Welcome home Isla” I heard from the door, it was mother. She was using her superficial nice mother’s voice, it wasn’t a good thing “How was school today?” She asked, her hand around the railing of the stairs.
“Good, good” I struggled to choke out, clenching my fist harder, my heart hammering in my chest for anticipation, even when she didn’t say much, I knew she was up to something.
“Do you remember the boy who brought you home last night?” She asked and I looked up to see her face.
“Ronan Byers had you delivered to our doorstep since you couldn’t walk properly” she made her way towards me, her voice subtle and her movements were slow as though they were precisely calculated. I could tell that I was in huge trouble.
“I..I didn’t know why he did that mother” I answered, my head bent down to avoid her chilling gaze.
“Look up child” she placed a finger on my chin “No need to lie. You had a good time with him and he brought you back, what’s wrong with that?”
“I swear mother, I didn’t know that he brought back or why, I…I passed out” I admitted.
“Of course you did” she pulled out a whip and launched it towards me, pushing me to the slippery ground.
“I sent you to Lunaris Academy to care for your sister, my daughter and you go there to get distracted by a boy?!” She yelled, lunging the whip at me again as I reached out for help, help I knew was futile.
“I didn’t mother..” I begged “I fainted which is wh..”
Her whip went for my sides once again, pulling blood with it as it went up in the air and tears trickled down my cheeks as my side hurt even more than before.
“I’ll leave you be, because it’s a full moon but if this happens again, consider yourself homeless!” She walked right out of the living room, angrily while I was left in a bloody uniform and a pool of my tears.
After washing up my uniform for the evening, I looked at the mirror in my little room and stared long and hard. If mother were to catch me sneaking out, I’d be dead but if I don’t leave tonight, I’ll dead in two days.
I’d rather die trying to live than die not trying. And so, in the dead of the night, I took my back pack and went down the unchecked valley, the same route I had used to school, the only difference was that, in the morning, there was no cottage in sight but at night, there it stood, a glimmer of light inside.
I knocked on the door softly and there he was, standing in front of me, his steel grey eyes looking at me and before I could heed to his signal of coming in, I threw up blood in front of him, but he didn’t rush to my aid.
“Gee, thanks professor for not helping” I said sarcastically, making my way past the front porch.
“You’ll be fine after this” he said, leading me further inside.
“I hope so” I mumbled.
“Lie” he ordered, pointing to the king sized bed in front of him. I turned to give him a quizzical look, I couldn’t tell if he was serious or not.
“Are you crazy Professor..”
“It’s Kael to you Isla” he said without sparing a glance at me “Now lie so I can help you”
“I can’t. I’m not going to!” I protested.
“And break the contract? You will die if you do so” he informed me.
“But I’d rather die than lay with my professor, I’m leaving!” I opened the door to leave when suddenly I felt my knees go numb and my body grow stiff.
“Isla! Isla!” He yelled my name but I was on the floor, blood pooling in my mouth and my body unmoving.
“You might want to die, but I’m not gonna let you” he placed his arm around me and lifted me just enough to reach the bed.
“Wh..what are you doing?” I heaved with blood in my mouth.
“Saving your life” he answered, biting his wrist and placing it above my mouth, letting his blood drip inside of me.
Oh, he’s just giving me blood, then it’s not so bad
I could feel a surge of energy grow inside of me, so much energy that I took hold of his arm and wanted more of him, his blood.
“Control yourself Isla”
But I couldn’t, I wanted his blood, but this was the activity of the tales of vampires, not our kinds.
“I can’t..I can’t stop it” I said with my lips parted, my chest heaving, blood at the corner of my lips.
“I know” he responded, pressing his lips onto mine with so much force I felt my teeth bite his lip but he didn’t seem to mind, neither did I. I wrapped my arm around his neck and I felt his hand in my hair, tilting my head back to let his lips go further and then he pulled away, his breathing ragged.
My lips parted slightly and my chest tightened but most importantly, I didn’t feel satisfied. “F*ck I want more” I groaned, my professor’s lips tasted better than I had thought they would.
