Nagging reality

2107 Words
Cold bit into my skin, and I groaned softly, tugging on the comforters of my bed so they covered my exposed skin more thoroughly. I froze, my hand clenched around my familiar blanket, taking a deep breath of it to confirm that it was indeed mine, I could still smell the fading scent of when I had accidently poured a whole bottle of perfume on it, thank goodness it had faded. My eyes snapped open, and my room stood before me. I was lying in my bed. How had I gotten here? The last thing I remembered was walking home from school, but I quickly disregarded it, blinking away the sleep in my eyes. Locating the source of the coldness, I noticed my bedroom window was wide open, the curtains billowing as the breeze drifted them further inside my room. Groaning I pulled myself out of the safe, warm haven of my bed and padded over to the window. I stared out into the forest expecting to be met with some stare fixed on my house, but I saw nothing but eerie darkness that engulfed within the woods. Suddenly I recalled my last previous encounter with Derrek, then shut the windows. I still hadn't completely gotten used to the constant nagging issue I had gotten myself into, werewolves. I took a quick shower, lingering in the waterfall of warmth a bit longer than normal, hoping it could somehow wash away all my worries; the chill in the air still hadn’t gone completely away in my room, I took a quick glance at the mirror trying to decide if I should spare a few minute to fix up my hair a little and apply a little makeup. Makeup?, what the hell is wrong with me? I can't still be seriously crushing over Derrek, he pretty much could be the death of me. I rushed into my room and put on the first clothes I could find, snatched my bag from my bed and rushed downstairs, walking down the stairs it came to me that this all felt like the first day, the first day I met Derrek Sinclair, maybe the past few days had just been one long bad dream coz there's no way werewolves were real right?, I got into the kitchen and make a quick cup of coffee, I slowly drank the black liquid still trying to make sense of the past few days. I downed the remainder of the content in the mug, dumping the mug into the kitchen sink as moved out into the yard. I proceeded to the sidewalk thinking I should take my car instead of walking, I finally decided walking felt right today. I walked down the street, trying hard not to imagine a pair of eyes watching me, I took a quick glance at the forest picking up my pace as I grew more anxious by the minute, the darkness lurking beneath the forest drawing my attention deeper within, my glance slowly turning into a stare as I immediately snapped out of it when I bumped into a man"hey, watch it" he yelled at me, I paid him no attention and raced to school keeping my eyes away from the forest. ******************************************************************************************** Mr.Terry had spent the last forty five minutes telling stories about his life which nobody seemed to care about but for some reason I found myself trying to listen, hoping maybe somehow it could help me forget the my current predicament. There was chattering behind me, and I glanced quickly my eyes skimming over the student body that filled up the wood's class. I sighed a sigh of relief when I realized I hadn’t caught on a certain pair of reflective silver eyes, that certainly would’ve ruined my resolve to ignore any glimpse of the dream last night. A flash of white appeared before my eyes, and flustered I took the stack of papers from the guy sitting next to me, picking a packet apart from the rest and passing it on to the person on my other side. The title boldly stated Wood's Class, as if no one knew which class we were actually in. I looked over the list, and soon got caught up on the excitement that had passed over the room; the projects we were making were not easy in the least. A dresser would be taking up most of this marking period and I read through the schedule, pleased that we would be starting it next week at the latest. Too bad I wouldn’t be able to take a piece of furniture like that up to a college dorm; I guess I could leave it to the Johnson's. I mused on; practically ignoring the whole overview Mr. Terry was giving the class on this year’s projects. The bell came on all too soon for me, and I collected my backpack, which was steadily filling with textbooks from various classes, and papers that were collected in them. We filed out of the room, everyone eager to get to lunch, I hated the fact that I got to see more faces than I hoped for I stuffed the book bag into the locker of mine with all my might, struggling to close the door with both my hands pressed tightly against the metal, and my feet slowly sliding down the linoleum floor. In a flash another hand appeared and the locker clicked as they gave little effort to close the stupid contraption. I whirled around to see my helper, but locked on the steely eyes I had been dreading. “Oh god, you are real,” I murmured, reality crashing down on me, it was rather depressing. "Hello to you to"Derrek said with a smirk on his face, his voice sounding a little more relaxed than I remembered it on our last meeting when my fate was being decided. "Can’t we just forget all that happened…and perhaps I go on with my life as I knew it?” I asked, my fingers twisting together in a hope of luck behind my back. “Nope.” He stated simply and indicated with a nod of his head towards the lunch room. Where was Autumn when I needed her, although I hated how she worshipped him with her eyes, it would anyways save me from whatever it is we have to talk about, even if I have a clear idea of what it is. With a defeated sigh I followed, seeing no way out of it and besides I was hungry from having to skip a breakfast this morning. “We need to talk,” he said as we walked into the lunchroom, the noise seemed to be dulled in the crowded lunch room today, and giving a glance around the room I noticed none of my friends was in the room. "About?” I inquired walking towards the lunch line, not really caring if he followed or not, mostly hoping he didn’t. But he did, and but didn’t say anything as we both silently went through the lunch line, that was moving slower than normal. I could feel his presence behind me, sensing the fact that he was taller than me, his body radiated heat and I felt like snuggling up closer to him in the cold of the cafeteria. The thought had me taking a step further down the line, away from him, my cheeks blushing furiously as I snatched up a plate of whatever they were serving not bothering to check. “You know,” he murmured, it seemed almost as if a question and a fact in one, the underlying message was a rock in the pit of my stomach, he took his plate from the lunch lady and we proceeded towards a table. We settled ourselves in the table of the farthest corner, it was close to the window, I looked out through the window as watching as it rained slowly on the sidewalk, making everything turn a darker color than before. No one sat around this corner, preferring to stay closer to the other side, looking out at the passing cars and such; we were only greeted by the woods that seemed to become an increasingly disturbing place in my thoughts. He was staring at me, his tray as untouched as mine was at the moment, I shifted my gaze towards the fork, acting as if it had a sudden draw on me. He sighed heavily, before running a hand through his midnight black hair, making it stand up on end further before slowly settling back down into its gentle curls, “I understand how crazy, all this have been lately and we've not really had the chance to talk about it,” he chuckled nervously. "What is there to talk about, we've been through the basics already" I murmured, toying with my food trying not to look at him, I finally raised my head looking towards him only to find him staring at the woods through the windows as it gently drizzled outside. "Yeah, but you never got to tell me how you feel about all this" He said rubbing his hands against each other, I don't think I've ever seen Derrek this nervous, he kept his gaze on the forest, "so I'm giving you the chance to ask anything else you want to know" I shifted my back towards my food "Okay" I whispered. "I'm a werewolf, well you already figured that out...." he started. He spent the last half an hour going over his pack's history and all the basics he had already explained to me, it all started to bore me then I suddenly asked him something "I thought werewolf were this huge humanoid creature with wolf characteristics?" I finally said unable to listen to his history any longer, he finally shifted his gaze towards me which had been on the forest since he started talking" well that's one way to describe a lychanthrope" he said, "a what?" I asked with a puzzled look across my face, he looked at me with a raised eyebrow, surprised like I was supposed to have an idea of the meaning of what he just said" you've never heard of a lychan?" he asked me, "Nope" I answered blankly, either of us had barely touched our food, we were more engrossed in the conversation at the moment. "hmnn, I see" he commented looking at his food as he took a bite of it, I said nothing watching him expecting him to say more and he did, he raised his head his face now facing mine as he stared at me he took a sip of his drink which had been untouched the whole time, clearing his throat as he was about saying something. 'He didn't have to be so dramatic with the response' I thought as I watched him."lychanthrope is what becomes of a human after they've been bitten by one of us, they're what we call a non pure blood" he finally said, "why do you call them that?" I asked him in what seemed to be a whisper, " you see unlike us werewolves, lychans have no control over their transformation they assume that humanoid beast form under a full moon and their humanity is completely suppressed by the beast side they now portray. They would harm even their own family in that state, to them it is no gift, it's a curse" Derrek said his look all serious as he downed the remaining content in his cup. I kept thinking about what he had said about a lychanthrope and couldn't help but imagine what if he had bit me when I found out about his secret that day, I would become some sort of cursed human with a beast living in me ready to go berserk under the light of a full moon, I had completely lost interest in the lunch in front of me as I continued messing with it, I could hear Derrek finish up his meal as meal, I was about to say something when I felt someone walk up behind me. "Hmnnn, well if it isn't my favorite buddy ken, its been a while hasn't it" a familiar female voice said behind me, I recognized the voice quite well, it's one I've been dreading to hear, I turned around slowly wishing it wasn't her. "s**t, the b***h finally decided to show up" I murmured to myself as my eyes met with Annie's, she was standing right behind me with her minions right beside her. It seems today just keeps getting better *sigh*
