Danny lay there, mind slowing down, body well-adjusted to the comfortable cushions. He took her advice and as odd as it seems. He fell asleep and got his rest. After some time of slumbering, a sudden loud buzz of familiarity flared up and broke his peaceful rest. His alarm clock did what its intent was for, woke him up. He looked around his room befuddled, leaning over he turned off the alarm clock. Gaining awareness of his surroundings. Remembering all the scratches and stuff he looked about his body to find no visible wounds adorning his flesh. Fixing up his wrinkled papers he slept on and rolled around with. He realized that he wasn’t filled with aches and pains as he had been so many other nights before. It was if he were truly refreshed from sleeping. After what seemed to be months upon months of erratic and unpredictable nightmares. He had finally gotten decent sleep. Perplexed by all of this he arose from bed to get ready for school. His usual early morning ritual beginning with a spring in his step. Eating cereal, watching something on TV, getting dressed and packed for school, then heading out to meet up with Gordon. He could tell there was something different about Danny. He knew of him dragging in the mornings often being tired and grumpy for some time. Danny admitted to having a good night’s sleep after working on their campaign for later that day and tomorrow.
“Yeah after school is going to be awesome! We will all hole up in the garage with snacks, drinks, books, and papers! It’s going to be a blast.” Gordon’s excitement could barely be contained it seemed. “I got the guys all rounded and ready for later today. John will be late cause he’s gotta do some stuff for his mom. He said we could start things up without him.” Filling Danny in on the details they would reach the school entrance in a short time.
“Kind of glad John will be late it’ll give me time to flesh you guys out to get a bit of an edge on his lizardfolk. He’s going to try and bully himself into being the leader of you guys I can already see it happening.” He predicted the future because he had seen it happen so many times prior. Some attempts succeeded some failed. “This will be a fun challenge to meet, we will see later today how it plays out.” Danny’s parting words to his oldest friend before heading parting ways to get to class.
“Hey, hey! Danny I almost forgot! Nice necklace man, your grandma has awesome taste in jewelry and stuff!” Gordon yelled at him before heading upstairs to class.
Reaching up to his neck he felt the necklace, how did he not notice it earlier? Before heading into class he rushed into the bathroom to check in the mirror. Much to his surprise, it was the necklace Elsa gave him. The one he was given while sleeping. Becoming momentarily dizzy from somehow attaining this should have been a physically impossible necklace. He took a deep breath, splashed some water in his face, and collected himself. He would deal with it later he told himself. Today was going to be a good normal day. Making his way from the bathroom towards the classroom he shed the anxiety with ease. Upon entering the classroom he turned in his homework from the previous day and spoke with his teacher a little. Then he took his place at his desk to begin the day’s lessons. Watching his teacher write things on the marker board and explain things was all but blurred out by Danny. He had his mind on many other things going on in his life. His pretend to pay attention attitude had been honed to perfection. His auto-pilot school mode still played a pivotal role for him. He told himself that today was going to be an awesome day of friends, gaming, and just hanging out. However, when it got dark and the urge to sleep became too significant to ignore. What would happen to him then? What sort of strange happenstances would occur when he retired for the night like so many other people in the world? His fingers would come up to tug on the necklace to ensure its validity. It was real which meant, everything that was going on was and perhaps had been real for some time now. He needed some answers to questions he couldn’t even figure out how to ask yet. Time was always the enemy it seemed. The classic hurry up and wait scenario was unfolding before him. Perhaps it was his impatience shining through and still remnants of his juvenile age showing. It occurred to him that he was zoning out heavier than usual on the matter. With all his willpower he cast it as far aside as he could to focus on the daily tasks at hand within the school walls. Seeking out answers to things on his own time, long after the daytime hours have past and it was time for the night to reign over the lands. For once Danny found himself eager to see night-time come to pass. He now was glad he didn’t use the cedar root, things wouldn’t have turned out the way they did had he done so. He finally comes to the conclusion to embrace the dream walking. What was once a horrid fear had become an intriguing adventure of self-discovery. Much like his friends in their pen and paper games he was eagerly awaiting the next time he could visit the world so few humans ever could. The only difference between them was his fantasy realm was very much real, very much deadly, and very much intoxicating.
“Mr. Hues, would you care to answer the question?” Mr. Fillet caught Danny’s attention.
Danny quickly looked at the board and answered correctly to his teacher’s surprise. The subject at hand was English so it was fairly easy for him to fill in gaps when it came to being lost in thought. Danny kept his focus on the normal world, where he was a normal young man, with a normal school, a somewhat normal life, and dorky normal friends. This was the world that he belonged to… For a time at least…
