Chapter 6: The Cracks Begin to Show

1257 Words
Sophie sat in her room that night, her laptop dark, her phone silent. The email had been sent hours ago, and now, all she could do was wait. Waiting wasn’t something Sophie had ever been good at, but tonight, it didn’t bother her. Tonight, she felt calm, almost eerily so, like a storm waiting to break. The match had been struck. Now, all she needed was for the fire to catch. She leaned back in her chair, her mind running over every detail of her plan. Emma’s closest ally wasn’t just a friend—she was someone who prided herself on loyalty and honesty. Sophie knew she wouldn’t stay silent after seeing the video. No, she’d confront Emma, demand answers, maybe even spill the truth to others in their circle. Sophie didn’t have to do the dirty work herself. She just needed to give people the tools to destroy Emma on their own. But as Sophie stared out the window into the dark night, she couldn’t help but feel a flicker of unease. Ethan’s words from the greenhouse lingered in her mind: You’ve got a lot on your mind lately... like you’re carrying some big secret. He had said it so casually, but Sophie couldn’t shake the feeling that he had seen through her. Could he be a problem? Could he interfere with her plans? Sophie pushed the thought away. Ethan was just a distraction. A good distraction, maybe even a comforting one, but nothing more. She couldn’t afford to let him or anyone else derail her focus now. She had come too far to stop. By the next morning, the whispers had started. Sophie could feel them buzzing through the campus like static electricity. Everywhere she went, students huddled in tight groups, their voices low but urgent, their eyes flicking toward Emma whenever she passed. It didn’t take long for Sophie to confirm what she already knew: the video had done its job. Sophie walked into the library just in time to catch snippets of a conversation between two students at a nearby table. “Did you see it?” one of them whispered, her voice hushed but excited. “The gala video? Yeah, it’s all over. I can’t believe Emma would do something like that. And with him of all people.” “She’s gonna lose it when she finds out.” Sophie slid into a seat near the back, pulling out her notebook and pretending to focus on her work. But her mind was racing. The video was spreading faster than she had anticipated. She had expected it to stay confined to Emma’s circle for at least a day or two, but it seemed her so-called friends couldn’t resist spilling the drama to anyone who would listen. It was messy, but Sophie didn’t mind. Chaos worked in her favor. The tension came to a head during lunch. Sophie had taken a seat at one of the outdoor tables near the main quad, her tray untouched as she watched the scene unfold. Emma was sitting with Jace, her expression tight, her usual confidence replaced by a visible tension. Jace, oblivious as ever, seemed more concerned with his phone than with the storm brewing around them. Then it happened. One of Emma’s friends—a tall, sharp-eyed girl named Claudia—walked up to their table, phone in hand, her expression a mix of anger and disbelief. “Emma,” Claudia said, her voice cutting through the noise of the quad. “We need to talk. Now.” Emma froze, her hand tightening around her fork. “What are you talking about?” she said, trying to sound dismissive, but the edge in her voice betrayed her. Claudia held up her phone, the screen angled just enough for Emma to see. “This. Care to explain?” Jace glanced up, his brow furrowing. “What’s going on?” “Nothing,” Emma snapped, her voice rising slightly. She turned to Claudia, her face pale but her eyes flashing with anger. “Where did you get that?” “Does it matter?” Claudia shot back. “It’s all over campus now. People are saying—” Emma stood abruptly, cutting her off. “Let’s talk somewhere private,” she said through gritted teeth, grabbing Claudia by the arm and pulling her away from the table. Jace watched them go, confusion written all over his face. Sophie watched the scene unfold, her expression neutral but her heart racing with satisfaction. The cracks were no longer subtle. They were wide and jagged, and soon, Emma’s carefully curated image would crumble completely. That evening, Sophie was heading back to her dorm when she saw Ethan waiting outside the building. He was leaning against the wall, his hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable. Sophie’s heart skipped a beat, but she kept her face calm as she approached him. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her tone light but guarded. Ethan straightened, his gaze meeting hers. “I wanted to talk to you.” “About what?” Ethan hesitated, his eyes searching hers as if trying to read her thoughts. “You’ve been different lately,” he said finally. “More... intense.” Sophie raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. “Is that a bad thing?” Ethan shook his head. “Not necessarily. But I can’t help but feel like you’re... pushing something. Or someone.” Sophie’s stomach tightened, but she didn’t let it show. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Ethan stepped closer, his voice dropping to a softer tone. “Sophie, I don’t know what’s going on, but I’ve seen what happens when people let revenge consume them. It doesn’t end well.” Sophie’s breath caught, but she quickly recovered. “I’m not looking for revenge,” she said, her voice steady. “I’m just... taking control of my life.” Ethan didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t push further. “Just be careful,” he said. “Sometimes the things we think will make us feel better end up costing us more than we realize.” For a moment, Sophie felt a flicker of doubt, a small c***k in the wall she had built around herself. But she quickly pushed it aside. Ethan didn’t understand. He couldn’t understand. This wasn’t just about revenge—it was about justice. About making Emma and Jace pay for what they had done. “I’ll be fine,” she said, forcing a smile. “But thanks for the concern.” Ethan studied her for a moment longer, then nodded. “Alright. I’ll see you around.” As he walked away, Sophie let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Ethan’s words had shaken her, but they wouldn’t stop her. She was too far in now. There was no turning back. By the next morning, Emma’s world was in freefall. The video had reached not just her circle of friends but the wider campus. Rumors swirled about her relationship with Jace, about what had happened at the gala, about whether Emma was as perfect as she wanted everyone to believe. Sophie watched from a distance, her expression calm but her mind racing. The video was only the beginning. There were still more cards to play, more moves to make. Emma might think she could recover from this, but Sophie knew better. She wasn’t just playing a game—she was rewriting the rules. And Emma had no idea what was coming next.
