*DAMIAN’s POV.*
I tossed and turned for hours, not being able to sleep. This wasn't the first time I had difficulty sleeping, but this time it had nothing to do with my nightmares but with her, knowing she was a few rooms away from mine.
I was well aware of the reason for my restlessness right from the start. I knew there was a pull between us, but today it became clear. My reaction to her getting hurt and Silver being protective of her confirmed it all.
She was my mate.
It’s been years since I gave up finding a mate; I was sure the Moon Goddess was punishing me by not blessing me with a family of my own, and now I wasn’t sure what to think.
This was going to cause an uproar, both for the wolves and humans. The last time a wolf had been mated to a human was centuries ago, before the war between my kind and the humans.
I sighed, getting out of bed and absentmindedly walking out of the room to where she was. I tried for the past few weeks to vanquish the pull, and now I wanted nothing more than to acknowledge it.
Slowly opening the door as I quietly walked inside, shutting it behind me. My partner was lying on the bed, sound asleep, with her back facing me.
I walked over to the other side of the bed so that I could see her face as I gently laid myself on an empty spot beside her.
She was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, with her perfect round eyes. Her small pink lips were in the form of a pout, as was her beautiful red hair.
I sometimes wonder what it would feel like to run my hands through her smooth, thick locks and how soft it would feel in my hand.
Reaching my hand out and slowly inching it closer to her face, my pointy fingers ran down her nose to her lips before cupping her cheek in my hand and softly caressing it.
*ELARA* subconsciously moved her head, leaning closer to my touch as she let out a blissful groan.
Why was I behaving this way, like a lovesick puppy?
If Loukas saw me acting this way, he would no doubt have a field day.
Snatching my hand away from her face, I got up to my feet. Swinging her door shut, I walked out of the room.
Still not able to sleep, I walked out of the palace, letting Silver take over, and we both ran into the woods with a clear destination in mind.
I closed my eyes, lying back down with a hand on my forehead and listening to the water flow, which was slowly calming whatever storm was blazing in me.
After staying for a few hours, I shifted back to my wolf form, returning back to the palace as the sun was beginning to show its face.
I walked into the shower and took a quick, refreshing bath before changing into some clothes, then plopped myself down on the bed, my eyes slowly drifting closed.
It wasn’t until the next second that I heard a knock on my door, and I huffed, annoyed at having been disturbed.
“Come in,” I snapped, sitting up on the bed as the door swung open and Loukas’ face was in it with a smile on his face.
“How can you possibly look worse than yesterday?” he says, closing the door behind him. I puffed, not in the mood for his playful attitude.
“Geez, live a little, man. With that frown on, you might end up having tonnes of wrinkles on your face in no time.” He teased, taking a seat on the couch.
“What do you want, Loukas? You couldn’t possibly wait till the sun came out.”
“It’s morning already, besides, I saw you running back to the palace. So, I know you haven’t slept yet.” He leaned forward on his seat, resting both his hands on his knees. He had a concerned look on his face as he watched me.
“What’s wrong? Is it the nightmares again?”
I clenched my jaw, turning my head to glance out the window before looking back at him. “I don’t think Neve would be thrilled to wake up alone on the bed, you know how cranky she gets.”
Loukas nodded his head, a frown on his face, but wiped it off with a smile. “It’s true she does get cranky, and with the baby coming anytime soon, it gets worse, but she will understand. You are her friend, and she cares deeply about you too.”
I rolled my eyes without saying anything, but no, he was right. The three of us had grown up close right from when we were kids. After we hit puberty, anyone was maybe able to decipher the chemistry between Loukas and Neve.
We could all see they were made for each other when the mating ritual arrived and they were both mated together. They were a good match.
We still became best friends, hanging out with each other. It was easy for me to see Loukas since it’s required for us to meet on a daily basis, as he was my second in command.
Neve had other priorities; she wasn’t just a doctor but a wife and a mother, someone the younger females turned to for advice.
“Judging from the way you are avoiding the questions, I would say it’s not about the nightmare. This is something else.” Loukas’ words snapped me out of my thoughts, and I turned to look at him, still not saying a word.
He sighed when he finally noticed that he wasn’t going to get an answer from me. “Ugh. You are impossible. Sometimes I wonder how we became friends.” He whispered jokingly, even though he knows I am still able to hear him.
“Tell me about it.”
He smirked, sticking his tongue out like a child while leaning back into his seat.
“Why are you here, Loukas?” I questioned, running my hand through my hair with an eyebrow c****d up.
“Well, I came to give a report on the matter you asked me to check on.” He responded; his tone turned serious, and his fists clenched together. “I can’t believe the head of maids could stoop so low to do that to an innocent maid, and I heard this wasn’t the first time she had done this, abusing them and giving them to the guards to assault when they haven’t done anything wrong.”
“Tell me everything.” I gave the command, and he began telling me what had happened.
My hands formed a fist, and my eyes blazed with fire when he talked about a maid being hit repeatedly for any reason, and I knew fully well who that maid was.
I struggled to get control of my wolf, as he wanted nothing more than to rip the head off the neck of the head maid.
Getting up from the bed, I stomped out of my room, went to the elevator with Loukas behind me, and we both made our way to the maids’ quarters.
