As Sky packed up her things, Lukas turned to her and asked, “Do you have plans tonight, Ms. Sky?”
“I do, actually. My friend is having a party.”
“Ah, what a shame,” he replied. “Perhaps I can drop you off somewhere?”
“I wouldn’t want to impose,” Sky responded politely.
“No imposition. I offered,” he said smoothly.
Sky didn’t know what to say. The whole situation felt awkward, and she couldn’t quite explain why.
Thankfully, Lukas’ phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the screen and answered the call. After a short conversation, he turned back to her.
“Apologies, it seems I need to take a rain check on the ride. I have to attend to something,” he said. “We’ll see each other again soon, Ms. Sky. I look forward to it.”
He smiled at her again.
Sky returned a tight smile and thanked him politely.
After he left, Sky sat back down in her chair, feeling strangely tired.
She opened her Uber app and booked a car. While waiting, she touched up her makeup, brushed her hair back a little, and checked her teeth for any food particles.
She was actually excited to see the boys—and Tommy. This was a party, after all, so it would be different from their usual quiet dinners and movie nights.
A text message notification broke her thoughts. It was Tommy. She smiled immediately.
Tommy: How was the meeting? Are you almost done?
She quickly replied.
Sky: Done! On the way!
A few seconds later, Tommy replied again.
Tommy: Great! Can’t wait! We’re playing beer pong so I might not be able to answer the door. Just come on in.
Sky chuckled. Of course they would be busy playing beer pong. They always took their games very seriously.
With a lighter heart, Sky went outside to wait for her car.
After paying the driver, Sky stepped out of the car and looked up at her apartment building. She could already hear the loud music and see the lights coming from Tommy’s unit.
She giggled in anticipation.
Sky rarely used the elevator. She would avoid it for as long as she could. She would only use it if she needed to carry some heavy things up her apartment, or if she was with Tommy.
As she made her way up the stairs, she checked herself in the mirror in the hallway.
Good enough.
She went inside her own apartment first to drop off her iPad and bag before heading to Tommy’s. She refilled the dogs’ water bowls and patted them for a bit before heading back out the door.
When she stepped onto Tommy’s welcome mat, she took a deep breath, steadied herself, grabbed the doorknob, and pushed the door open.
To her surprise, someone was standing right behind the door.
The door swung open and hit the person straight in the face with a loud thud.
“Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry!” Sky exclaimed in panic.
She quickly looked up at the person she had hit—and froze.
The face staring back at her, wincing in pain, was someone she never thought she would see again.
At least, not in this country.
