Chapter 3: Valerie

870 Words
I walked into the courtyard waiting on my date for the evening and was stunned by how beautiful it looked. There were twinkling lights hanging from the trees and flowers floating in the fountain. Waiters/waitresses walked around with glasses of champagne and there was an open bar. A huge dance floor sat in the middle of the room with tables surrounding it that were draped with navy blue and white table cloths. Not to mention tons of beautiful flowers all over the place and everyone was dressed in their finest gowns and suits. In my stunned state I didn’t notice Blake come up behind me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and moved my hair to the side to place a kiss on my cheek. Though he wasn’t my mate, that I know of, that kind of affection still felt nice. He was being oddly affectionate during this trip considering we were broken up. I leaned into him, smiling, and his voice rang in my head. “You look absolutely stunning. Dance with me?” I nodded and he took my hand and led me to the dance floor. The first song was a slow one so he led me in a waltz. I always forget how much of an amazing dancer he is. Our mothers put us both in dance classes when we were younger so we could keep up at fancy parties like this. Blake pulled me closer to whisper in my ear. “I know we wanted to make it easier when we found our mates but I need you to know that I’m really fighting the urge to kiss you right now.” He tilted my chin up to look at him and stared into my eyes. I stared back and as if he could tell what I was saying he let go of my chin and I rested my head on his chest. As we were dancing the feeling that we were being watched came over me. As quickly as it came it went away and was replaced with something else. I lifted my head and began to look around the courtyard. “Hey. You okay?” Blake was looking at me with a mix of concern and confusion on his face. “Yeah. Something’s going on. Do you see David or my dad?” He began to look around as well. “Over there. Looks like David and Enzo are leaving with the Alpha and Beta of Autumn moon.” I pulled away from David and began to walk over when he caught my arm. His eyes were glazed over, he was being mindlinked by someone and I had one guess as to who. When his eyes turned back to their regular grey shade he looked at me and I could already tell I wasn’t going anywhere alone for the rest of the night. I had to think of a way to get away from Blake and figure out what was going on. “Come on. You’re my date and I like this song. Let’s dance.” He dragged me back onto the dance floor and kept me flush against his body for most of the dances. After we danced straight through four songs I finally thought of the simplest excuse to get away from him. “If you’ll excuse me. I have to use the restroom.”  “I’ll accompany you.” “No no. I can find it. I’ll be right back.” “Nice try but what kind of gentleman would I be if I let you wander around here on your own. Especially since I already know where it is. Come on.” He looped my arm through his and we made our way into the pack house. Damn it! He was not letting me out of his sight for a second until we got to the bathroom. Oh please moon goddess! Let there be a window in there. We finally reached the restroom and I walked in while Blake stationed himself outside the door. I began to look around for another door or a window. Thank the moon goddess there was a window and it looked big enough for me to go through. I decided to turn on the water in the sink to mask the sound of the window being opened. I took off my heels and grabbed the waste basket and balanced myself on top so that I could reach the window. Once I got the window open I hiked my dress up, and jumped through. Once outside I took off in the direction I saw David going with the Autumn moon Alpha. I followed David's scent deep into the forest where I found his suit tucked behind a tree. He must have shifted, why would he need to shift? Since I’m not 18 I can’t yet and following them on foot would take too long. I decided to head back to the pack house before word got back to David, if it hadn't already, that I snuck off. On my way back I heard a voice in my head.  “Hello my little wolf” That voice- I feel like i’ve heard that voice before.
