Mr. Harker wanted to arrange the flowers in a vase and display them on their table at once, and he offered to place the wine in an ice bucket to chill while he was at it. Kade went with him after being tasked with bringing out the food already prepared in the kitchen.
As the two remaining people continued down the passageway to reach the back door, Mrs. Harker turned to Arden.
“I’m sorry, dear,” she said, sounding a little embarrassed, “I don’t believe I’ve caught your family name.”
Arden cleared his throat and answered, “It’s Callahan, ma’am.”
“Callahan…” Mrs. Harker slowly repeated with a nod, as if committing it to memory.
Despite feeling confident before that it would be fine, that he had been safe behind this new name all this time, Arden felt a spike of worry.
