ELENA “You missed the turn mom,” Halo points toward the street I drive by that leads to our– Drake’s house. “Yes, mummy has a surprise for you,” I lie, pushing the car further down the road. It isn’t completely a lie because it is a surprise, but maybe not the one he is expecting. “Are we visiting someone?” Halo asks as I kill the engine in front of our new home. If not for Halo’s treatment, I would have left the pack entirely but I can’t risk it. “Something like that,” I say, unlatching his belt and mine as well. I feel terrible for lying to him, but it’s something that is inevitable. How am I to tell a child that I left his father and moved out of the house because we are getting a divorce?
