Rising storms

The counterattack came faster than they expected. The next morning, Eve woke to urgent messages on her phone. Damien had struck back — hard. He had leaked twisted information to the press about her father’s case, painting Eve as a possible accomplice who had fled to save herself. The headlines were brutal: “Voss Daughter Resurfaces with Billionaire Husband — Coincidence or Cover-Up?” Eve’s hands trembled as she read the articles. The pain of her family’s destruction was being dragged into the spotlight again. She dressed quickly and went straight to Kael’s office. He was already there, pacing in front of the large windows, phone to his ear. When he saw her, he ended the call abruptly. “You’ve seen it?” he asked, his voice tight. “Yes.” Eve’s hazel-green eyes were stormy. “He’s trying to destroy what’s left of my reputation.” Kael’s jaw clenched. “My PR team is already working on a response. We’ll issue a statement denying any involvement and turning the focus back on his financial misconduct. But this is getting personal now.” Eve crossed her arms. “Then we make it more personal. I want to release the evidence about his underground lenders today. Hit him where it hurts most.” Kael studied her for a moment, the professional mask cracking slightly. “Are you sure you’re okay?” “I’m fine,” she said coldly. “Strictly business, remember?” The words hung heavy between them. Kael looked away, his hands clenching at his sides. “Fine. We’ll do it your way.” They spent the rest of the morning coordinating the next leak. The atmosphere in the office was thick with unspoken emotions. Every time their eyes met, the tension crackled — anger, hurt, and something deeper neither of them wanted to name. By midday, the new evidence went live. Damien’s connections to shady lenders were exposed, causing even more investors to pull out. His stock plummeted further. News channels were now running stories about possible criminal investigations. But Damien didn’t stay quiet. Late in the afternoon, Kael received another call. His face darkened as he listened. When he hung up, he turned to Eve. “He’s threatening to release proof that our marriage is fake. He’s also digging into my past — the underground years. If he connects the dots, it could destroy Draven Global.” Eve’s heart raced. “Then we need to be ready. I can have Marcus prepare a counter-file on Damien’s personal dealings.” Kael nodded, but his eyes lingered on her longer than necessary. “Eve… if this gets too dangerous, we can—” “No,” she cut him off. “We finish this. That’s the deal.” He looked like he wanted to argue, but instead he simply said, “Alright. We finish it.” That evening, the mansion felt heavier than usual. Rain lashed against the windows as Eve stood on her balcony, trying to clear her head. The revenge was working. Damien was bleeding. But the emotional cost was mounting. A soft knock sounded on her door. Kael stepped in when she opened it, looking exhausted and conflicted. “I just wanted to check on you,” he said quietly. “After today.” Eve crossed her arms, guarding herself. “I’m handling it. You don’t need to worry about me. We’re just business partners, right?” Kael stepped closer, his stormy eyes filled with regret. “I never wanted to hurt you. I thought pushing you away would keep us focused. Keep you safe.” Eve’s voice cracked slightly. “Well, you succeeded. I’m focused. And I’m safe. Just like you wanted.” The pain in her words seemed to hit him hard. For a moment, he looked like he might reach for her. Instead, he took a step back. “Goodnight, Eve.” He left, closing the door softly behind him. Eve sank onto the edge of her bed, tears finally falling freely. She was falling deeper for him every day, even as she tried desperately to protect her heart. Meanwhile, Kael stood in the hallway, leaning against the wall, fighting the urge to go back to her. Pushing her away was supposed to protect them both. But it was destroying him inside. The war with Damien was intensifying. And the war inside the mansion — between love and duty — was reaching a breaking point.
