Rewritten rules

The words hung between them like a promise. “Let’s rewrite the ending,” Kael had said, and for a moment, the world felt suspended. Eve stood in the dimly lit office, Kael’s forehead still resting against hers, his hands warm on her waist. Her heart hammered so loudly she was sure he could hear it. This wasn’t supposed to happen. She had come here for revenge, not to fall for the dangerous man she married. Kael pulled back slightly, his stormy gray eyes searching hers. “Too fast?” he asked, voice rough but gentle. Eve shook her head. “Just… unexpected.” She gave a small, breathless laugh. “Everything about you is unexpected.” A slow smile curved his lips — the real one that softened the hard lines of his face. “Good. I like keeping you on your toes, wife.” He didn’t push for more. Instead, he took her hand and led her out of the office toward the living room. They settled on the large sofa overlooking the dark ocean, the only light coming from the moon and a single lamp. For a while, they simply sat together, her head on his shoulder, his fingers tracing lazy patterns on her arm. “I meant what I said,” Kael murmured eventually. “I want this to be real. Not just the revenge part.” Eve tilted her head to look at him. “Even though I came to you with lies and secrets?” “Especially because of that,” he replied. “You’re the first person in years who looked at me and saw more than the ruthless billionaire or the man with the dirty past. You saw a weapon… and then you saw me.” The honesty in his voice cracked something inside her. She reached up and touched his jaw, feeling the light stubble beneath her fingers. “I’m scared, Kael. I’ve lost everything once already. If I let myself care about you and lose again…” “You won’t,” he said firmly, covering her hand with his. “Not while I’m breathing.” They stayed like that for a long time, talking quietly about small things — favorite foods, memories from before everything fell apart, even silly stories that made them both laugh. It was the most normal Eve had felt in months. The next morning brought reality back with full force. Kael was already in the kitchen when she came down, making coffee. He looked up with a warm smile that made her stomach flip. “Sleep well?” he asked. “Better than I have in a long time,” she admitted. They spent the morning going over new intelligence on Damien. Kael’s team had found promising leads — suspicious transactions and nervous business partners. As they worked side by side at the table, their knees brushing occasionally, the atmosphere felt charged but comfortable. At one point, Kael reached over and tucked a strand of her auburn hair behind her ear. The simple touch sent warmth spreading through her. “You’re staring again,” Eve teased. “Can’t help it,” he replied, voice low. “You look good when you’re plotting someone’s downfall.” She laughed, and for a moment, the heavy weight of revenge felt lighter. Later that afternoon, while Kael took a business call, Eve slipped away to contact Marcus. The news was concerning — Damien was asking more questions about Kael’s sudden marriage and had been seen near some of their old family connections. When she returned, Kael was waiting, arms crossed, a knowing look on his face. “Another secret meeting?” he asked, though there was no anger in his tone this time. Eve decided on honesty. “My contact. Damien’s getting closer. We need to accelerate our plan.” Kael pulled her into his arms without hesitation. “Then we accelerate. Together. No more going alone.” He kissed her then — slow and deep, full of promise and heat. When they broke apart, he rested his forehead against hers again. “We’re going to win this, Eve. And when it’s over, I want you to stay. Not because of any contract… but because you want to.” Her heart swelled. The lines between revenge and love had blurred completely. “I’m starting to want that too,” she whispered. But as they held each other, Eve couldn’t shake the feeling that Damien wouldn’t let them have their happy ending without a fight. The real storm was only just beginning.
