CHAPTER 2

Post 2 months 

“ So you have interned previously at a law firm for just twenty days. No other prior work experience right ?” The HR manager asked me firmly. 

“ Yes actually I had a hectic schedule of lectures and it wasn’t possible to work while studying. My college was strict about attendance so couldn’t miss lectures for any reason. But I am a fast learner and an avid reader so research work is my passion. I understand your concern but I can guarantee you that I have the capabilities to work under pressure and I will deliver the best results.” That’s all I could say to the HR manager with confidence. I wasn’t sure if he was impressed or not as he further asked me questions related to my education background.  With all my draining confidence I tried to answer his questions.

“ Miss Oriya we have a position for trainee in our firm. The trainee will be working under our Senior Advocate Mr. Raj Verma. Your expected duties will be to maintain his work schedule, attend court hearings, complete research work on our cases and further any work which arises. As I have seen you have keen interest in IPR, we shall try to give you work according to your interests. But as you already know our firm majorly deals with litigation  cases. You can start working rom Monday and Welcome to Verma Consultancy”. 

I was stunned to hear all this. My only reaction was a big smile from ear to ear. I couldn’t believe I landed with a position in the top tier law firm of Mumbai. It was like my dream come true. He congratulated me and requested me to be on time on Monday. 

The minute I was outside my office building, I remove my iPhone from my Aldo purse and dialed to my new friend without whom I wouldn’t get this position. 

“Chintan guess what ! I got that job in Verma Consultancy. Its all because of you ! I owe you big time for this “ I completed this sentence while jumping around in happiness. 

“Darling I just forwarded you the job opening. Its your talent that got you this position. Beside what are friends for right. So we meeting tonight to celebrate at our usually place ?”

I continued to walk towards my car while telling him “ Nope, not that boring bar again ! It’s my treat so we are going somewhere special. I will find new place on zomato and let you know. Meet you at 8. Bye “ I hang up the call in rush to get back home. 

My first week at work was hectic. I never thought it would be so difficult to work under the senior most lawyer who was also the co-founder. He already had assistant to help him but we would still have endless drafting and research work to complete. My boss was in his early fifties and had a charming personality. He was super professional and expected nothing less from me. We had amazing office perks and I was feeling blessed to work in this firm.

“So Miss Oriya how is your research going on ? I need that file tomorrow as we have the court proceedings next week.”  My boss said that after entering my cabin. Yes trainees like me had the privilege of a cabin but I had to share it with his personal assistant. 

“Sir I will complete it today itself. Don’t worry it’s all under control.” I confidently nodded my head and he left after giving me a smile.

“Oriya do you really think that you will complete it by tonight. That’s a lot of work, let me at least help you” he smiled and continued with his work.

“ Its ok Ravi, you know I love the challenge. But if you insist on helping me then please get me coffee. I’m super lazy to get up “ I asked him after giving my sweetest smile. Ravi had always been super friendly and helped me to get used to the work. I couldn’t have possibly survived a day without him in this firm.

“You and your lazy bum ! Fine I will get you coffee my highness” he said that while leaving the cabin.

Once he got back with coffee he was suddenly kept the coffee cups on the table with a bang. “why are you so hyped up ? Be careful of those files, our boss will kill us if we stain them” 

I couldn’t complete ahead and he said “ You know tomorrow we have an urgent meeting with a client. Guess who that client is ?”

“ Umm, is it any Bollywood actor or famous personality ?” I said after trying to understand his excitement and he nodded in disagreement. “Ravi then I don’t care who our client is. Just another case file for me” I shrugged and starting to work on my file. 

“Are you seriously not interested to know who he is ? Ok so guess one more time. He is nominated as the best businessman of the year” Ravi was still super excited and I was kind of irritated with his stupid client. 

“You know what Ravi, I’m not interested in your client and just let me continue my work. Your client is not going to magically complete this research for me. So spare me with your excitement.”

I continued my work silently and ignored his protests to answer further. Little did I know that my next meeting was going to be a roller coaster ride.
