Some years ago, my wife and I visited the Summer Fair at a county village a few miles from our home. It was a wonderful, warm, summer"s day and the Fair was being held in a field a mile from the village itself. After enjoying the attractions of the various displays, we decided to take a walk into the village and simply `take in the sights." On arriving in the village, we discovered it to be picturesque, well-tended and with beautiful houses and bungalows and pristine lawns and roadside verges. As for people, however, the place appeared deserted. Everyone must have been at the Fair, but we were also struck by the absence of animals, no dogs barking, no cats running across the road, not even a bird sang in the numerous trees that lined the road on both sides.
