For the next few days, Eric and I didn't exchange a single word.
The Downey Group has deep business ties with the Henderson Group, so he kept dropping by the office to see Rachel, and he'd stay for ages every time.
Everyone was whispering that the engagement with the Downey family was probably about to get a new bride.
More and more eyes landed on me, gloating from the gossip, pity from the soft-hearted, all burning into my skin.
I pretended I didn't see a thing and just kept grinding through my handover work like normal.
Friday rolled around, my last day at Henderson Corporation. That day, Rachel dumped a small collaboration deal on my plate.
This kind of tiny deal? I'd been handling these on my own since the day I graduated and joined the company.
But the second I walked into the venue, my gut screamed that something was off.
The other side had sent some paunchy, middle-aged manager to meet me.
The second his eyes landed on me, a greedy glint flickered to life, and his slimy gaze dragged slowly over every inch of me.
I shot Sarah a quick text, telling her to check what was going on with the other company. She was fast; less than ten minutes later, she texted me back.
She'd reached out to the other company's assistant and found out the deal was actually scheduled for next Monday, when their general manager would negotiate in person with our team.
So this was Rachel's doing. She'd bribed this manager to move the meeting early just to screw me over.
I couldn't help but huff a sharp, mocking laugh under my breath.
Did she actually think these cheap, dirty tricks could break me?
What a joke.
Every bit of my business track record I built with my own two hands, one deal at a time. And my tolerance for alcohol? That was hard-earned too.
Thirty minutes hadn't even passed before I'd poured round after round and left the guy passed out cold under the table.
I tucked the freshly signed contract under my arm, and walked steady as a rock to the front desk to settle the bill.
The second I stepped out of the private room, I ran straight into our biggest client, Mr. Stone, face-to-face.
After a few minutes of small talk, I connected the dots. Rachel was supposed to meet Mr. Stone here today for another deal.
He grinned at me and asked, "Lily, are you still working at Henderson Corp? How about coming to work for me instead? I'll double your salary."
I smiled and turned him down, "I'm still with Henderson Corp for now. I'd never measure up to a company as good as yours."
We chatted for a few more minutes before we went our separate ways.
I headed back to the Henderson Corp office to grab my things, then went back to the Henderson family house to start packing for my move.
When Mom saw me hauling my bags to leave, she tossed out a few half-hearted lines to convince me to stay. We'd lived together for over twenty years, after all, she said, and she'd always treated me like her own flesh and blood.
I just smiled and shook my head, turning her down.
If I actually stayed, the rest of the family would just be uncomfortable and unhappy, anyway.
I was just hauling my luggage out the front door when Rachel arrived home. She burst through the entrance, brimming with excitement, and bragged that she'd locked down the big contract.
The second the other side saw her, they'd signed on the dotted line before they'd even exchanged more than a few words.
Mom and Dad both laughed and praised her for how capable she was.
I didn't even bother glancing back as I climbed into my car and headed for the new apartment I'd rented.
Two quiet, uneventful days passed.
When Monday rolled around, Rachel sailed into the Henderson Corporation building with a bright, smug grin on her face.
After all, I, that eyesore, had quit my job and moved out of the family house. She'd just closed a huge deal, too. From now on, she'd be the only Henderson family heiress at Henderson Corporation!
End of Lily's POV
Meanwhile, Rachel barely sat down, still purring with satisfaction as she scanned her office from corner to corner, when the office door slammed open.
Ruth came barreling in, panic written all over her face. "Rachel, it's a disaster! The entire core R&D team all handed in their resignation out of the blue this morning. And Mr. Stone just called. He's canceling our partnership!
"We just got several more calls a few minutes ago! All our other partners heard Lily left the company, and every single one of them is pulling out of their contracts with us!"
