Chapter 2

1010 Words
The next day, Dad personally drove Rachel to the company for her first day of work. Everyone at the company had gotten the notice ahead of time, so they all gathered in the conference room waiting. Dressed in a crisp, tailored power suit, she stepped onto the podium with effortless poise and introduced herself to the room. When the executives heard that she was actually the real Henderson daughter, and that she was here to take over my position, every single one of them stared in total disbelief. Rachel, for her part, looked perfectly confident. She told the room she was more than qualified to handle the job. Every eye in the room turned to me, waiting to see how I'd react. I walked up to the podium with a calm, polished smile and announced I would work through a full week of handover to help her get up to speed with all the company's operations as quickly as possible. The very first thing Rachel did on her first day in office was seize my office for herself, then announce that she was hiring a brand-new personal assistant of her own. Sarah, who'd stuck by me for five years as my secretary and was one of the sharpest, most capable employees in the whole company, went pale with anger. Her face went dark with rage, and she was already on the verge of tears when she saw me. I gave her hand a gentle, reassuring pat. "It's okay, don't get so worked up. With your skills, you'll have no problem landing a great new job anywhere. Or if you'd rather stay with me, that's totally fine too." Sarah didn't hesitate for a second before nodding firmly. So I told her to go home, rest up, and wait for my call. When word spread around the company that I'd been booted into the shared office with all the new interns, plenty of people rushed over to say how unfair it all was. I just shrugged it off with a carefree smile, and told them all to just follow the new general manager's orders for now. The next day, Rachel's own new assistant showed up for her first day. Word around the pantry was that she was an old college classmate of Rachel's, and Rachel had poached her from her old job with a whopping seven-figure annual salary. On that very first day, I stopped by her desk three times to drop off a document for approval and didn't catch her once. In the end, I just took the paperwork straight into Rachel's office myself. I only ran into the new assistant on my way back out. It was still working hours, and she was sitting at her desk, blaring t****k at full volume. When she spotted me walking out of the general manager's office, she immediately blew a fuse, "Which department are you from? How dare you just walk in and out of the GM's office whenever you want?" I flicked a glance over her over-the-top influencer makeup and answered in a steady, even tone, "I have an urgent document that needs Rachel's signature." This assistant, whose name was Ruth, planted her hands on her hips and jabbed a finger right in my face, snapping. "All documents have to go through me first before they get to Rachel. Don't you even know basic office rules?" I answered her calmly, "I came by your desk three times earlier. You weren't here any of those times." My words caught her completely off guard, and she couldn't come up with a single retort. I just turned on my heel and walked straight back to my desk. Right as we got back to work that afternoon, she marched into the intern's office with her phone propped up for streaming, chattering loudly as she came, "Let me show you what the work environment is like at a top public company!" All my coworkers just kept their heads down and kept working like this was nothing out of the ordinary. I had no clue what she was up to until a colleague sitting next to me leaned over and whispered, "Ruth is doing a live stream. She says she's here to promote the company. She already did one broadcast this morning." I shot up out of my chair and marched straight over to yank the phone right out of her hand. Ruth flew into a rage and lunged at me to get it back. "Ugh, it's you again! What do you think you're doing, stealing my phone? Give it back right now!" I double-checked that the stream was cut off, then tossed the phone right back into her hands. "This is a working office. Didn't you know live-streaming isn't allowed here?" She curled her lip in open disdain. "What rule says we can't stream here anyway? Besides, this is a good promotion for the company! I'm an influencer with over 100,000 fans. Most people would kill to get me to shout them out. I'm doing them a favor here!" Her eyes then focused on my ID badge, and she let out a sharp, mocking snort. "Oh, now I get it. You're the fake heiress who stole the real one's place. What's the matter? Got so used to bossing everyone around that you still think you're the big family heiress?" She scoffed. "Rachel's way too nice to even keep you on the payroll. A spoiled little rich girl like you would be begging for change on the street if your so-called family dumped you, right?" She lifted her phone again, aiming it straight at my face to record. "I'm gonna post this online right now and let all netizens see what a shameless woman you are!" I swatted her phone out of her hand in one sharp motion, then pulled out my own phone to call security. Ruth's face turned bright red with rage. "You're just a regular low-ranking employee now! How dare you talk to me like this? I'm gonna go tell Rachel to fire you immediately!"
