The Secret Unveiled

Rhea felt her heart race as the shadowy figure approached. The previous roar reverberated in the yard, closer this time, and it sent shivers down her spine. With their gazes fixed on the stranger advancing from the darkness, Lucien and Magnus stood at her sides. Although every instinct told her that danger was imminent, she was unable to interpret the circumstances. The stranger's presence was obvious despite the darkness partially hiding his tall frame. His eyes gleamed sharply in the moonlight, but his features were obscured by shadow. Even though he was a complete stranger to her, there was something about him that seemed... familiar. "What is it that you desire?" Despite her powerful voice, Rhea's heart was pounding from the adrenaline of the moment. The man did not respond right away. He moved slowly and deliberately as he took another step closer. He did not feel scared. No, Rhea's heart skipped a beat as she attempted to weigh the circumstances. She shivered as the man finally spoke, "Rhea Ashford," in a smooth, quiet voice. "You are seriously in danger." Rhea felt the words strike her like a kick to the stomach. Her breath hitched, and she retreated reflexively, but the stranger's eyes followed her everywhere. With a tense physique, Lucien shifted slightly in front of her but refrained from approaching the stranger. He was holding out. "What are you saying?" Rhea posed the question, unsure if she wanted the response. The man had a half-smile curling his lips. "This marriage that you are about to get into is more than just a political ploy. It is a trap. Rhea's blood froze. Was a rival pack threatening to harm them? Or even worse? As Magnus stepped nearer, his eyes narrowed and his face tightened, causing the stranger to cringe slightly at his authority. "Are you willing to threaten my daughter?" Magnus's voice was low and menacing. The Alpha's might was fully unleashed. The stranger did not flinch, though. His dark eyes, however, were filled with something far more malevolent as he turned to face Rhea. "The trap has already been laid. The males around you are also using you. "...will not be able to save you," he said before pausing, his eyes darting to Lucien and then to the silent Dante. Rhea was gasping for air. She felt vulnerable because of the increasing tension and the cryptic, concealed meaning of his remarks. What had been going on? How did this man know so much, and who was he? The figure took a step back, his gaze firmly fixed on hers, before she could say another word. "You have until the hour of midnight. Discover the truth before it discovers you. The figure then vanished back into the darkness, leaving Rhea standing in startled stillness with her head spinning. For a minute, Rhea's intellect struggled to comprehend the mysterious warning, and she stood still. Her father, Lucien, and Dante stood equally still, tension in the air. With no more than a whisper, Rhea turned to Lucien and asked, "Who was he?" Lucien's gaze was narrowed as he scanned the shadowy garden, but the stranger was no longer there. "I am not sure," he responded in a strained voice. However, we must exercise caution. An angry tone of voice interrupted her father. It is, simply put, a threat. Nothing more. Rhea gave him a quick glance, uncertainty visible on her features. So why did not he take action? Why not just go? Magnus's jaw tightened. "Because we are being observed." They are not yet ready to engage in direct combat. Not until they get power. “But why me?” With the question reverberating in her mind, Rhea's voice broke. She was haunted by what the stranger said. Why now? This is the first time I have been involved in anything similar. She was grounded as Lucien's hand lightly touched her arm. "Rhea, you are not alone in this. We will decipher his meaning. As he met her gaze, his eyes grew softer. You must use caution, though. You can not trust everyone in your immediate vicinity. When his words finally sank in, Rhea's breath caught. How did he mean it? Was he referring to Xavier, her father, or possibly... anyone else? She began to have doubts, which twisted what she believed to be true. Magnus gave an authoritative command, saying, "Let us go inside." "We will take care of this in the morning." Rhea was hesitant. Though she could already see Lucien's and her father's reserved looks, she still wanted answers. Something was being withheld from her. She sensed a tension in the air that she was unable to identify. Rhea took another look at the deserted garden as they returned to the mansion, the stranger's warning still ringing in her ears. What did midnight signify to him? And who had been the adversary hiding in the shadows? There was an almost oppressive silence in the mansion. The thick air that lingered over the chamber made the music and laughing from the ballroom seem like they were from another planet. Rhea kept sensing that something was not right, but nobody wanted to talk about it honestly. "Sit, Rhea," Magnus ordered, gesturing to the soft chair beside the fireplace. "We should talk about this privately." Despite taking a seat, Rhea could not help but stare at Lucien. He stared at the flames, his jaw clinched, and he was silent. She sensed that he was emanating something strange. "You did not tell me everything," Rhea remarked softly, accusatory in tone. "This is more complicated than you are revealing, is not it?" She briefly saw something when Lucien's eyes flitted to hers; it might have been fear or shame. His mouth opened to say something, but Magnus cut him off. He warned her in a sinister voice that she had never heard before, saying, "Rhea, this is not the time for accusations." Rhea jerked her eyes at his. Why not? What is the reason for leaving me in the dark whenever something occurs? The warning from the stranger, the enigmatic comments from Lucien... You are keeping something from me! The unspoken gap widened as the tension between father and daughter flared in the air. Magnus's posture tensed and his gaze grew icy. His voice was low but menacing as he replied, "Rhea, you do not realise what is at stake." "You are unaware of how much more is happening. However, you will not sabotage the scheme. A sudden rage flared inside Rhea as she got up. The strategy? You are referring to the situation when I was coerced into a marriage that I did not want? Where is my every action regulated? Magnus yelled, "Enough," and slammed his fist against the table, causing the candles to flicker. "You will wed Xavier." It is no longer a topic of conversation. It is essential. Rhea felt her heart pound. For how long would she live this way? The study door opened before she could answer, and Xavier was there in the doorway, his face impassive. With a suave but unusually icy tone, Xavier stated, "I apologise for interrupting, but I have been asked to talk with you, Rhea." As she gazed at him, Rhea's heart fell, the storm that was building between them becoming too strong to ignore. As Xavier entered the room, Rhea was the focus of his icy blue eyes. As he stepped forward deliberately, the room appeared to contract. Rhea's posture remained rigid. Now what did he desire? The engagement was sufficient, right? Was not everything predetermined? Xavier added, "I thought we should discuss," in a slightly smoother voice than Rhea preferred. Concerning the future. Concerning us Rhea refused to look at him, crossing her arms. We have nothing to discuss. We have already committed ourselves. Although a smile formed on Xavier's lips, it did not extend to his eyes. "Well, you see, there is where you are mistaken." He spoke in a low, menacing tone. "We have not created anything as of yet. And we won't—unless you can respond to one of my questions. Rhea squinted, scepticism beginning to seep in. "What question is it?" Xavier took a step forward, his weight bearing down on her like a rock. Rhea, tell me. Really, who are you protecting? The words were too emotional for Rhea to ignore, and her heart skipped a beat. She hesitated, not knowing how to react.
