Chapter thirty-two

1021 Words
After the intervention, which went well, Moha, who feared that the same thing would happen again for the third time and that it would cause more and more victims, in agreement with the pack and the remaining wolves in Senegal, decided to move the supreme pack to Senegal. After almost two months of negotiations and a move, Moha's wish came true. Ndeye, who had been injured during the operation, had in the meantime almost completely recovered and spent most of her days with Coumba, whom she looked after and who was getting better and better. Seeing her, incidentally, in Mahmoud's arms at the end of the operation, Ndeye had cried her eyes out, especially when she learned from her why she had been torn from the wall. The fact was that she had managed to dig a tunnel that led more than 10 kilometers beyond the boundaries of the hideout with the help of some of the other captives in hiding. Only, on the day of their escape, they had been caught because one of them had talked, and to avoid the others being punished, she had taken all the blame on her. She knew that no matter how bad the situation was, Pape Matar would not kill her because she was the most useful of the captives to him. However, she did not expect such inhuman treatment from him, although she was not that surprised: to tie her to the wall like a common animal and let her starve to death. On the other hand, Coumba, quite the opposite of Ndeye, had very quickly accepted Mahmoud as her soul mate, especially after knowing that he was her savior, she who, innocently and secretly, had always believed in Prince Charming and fairy tales. With the supreme pack now settled in Senegal, Ndeye, who wanted to finally close the chapter on her past, decided to take advantage of the opportunity by doing everything she could to find out what happened to her parents after she was kidn*pped. She went then with Moha to the neighborhood where she had spent her entire childhood and which she found very difficult to recognize, as everything had changed so much. Unfortunately for her, the place was empty of life. They could not see a single living soul. It was then with surprise and suspicion that they apprehended the presence of an old woman in front of the house that had once been Ndeye's, the only thing that had not changed as if spared by the wheels of time. They hesitated to approach her and even pretended not to have noticed her as they passed by. But she had noticed them, and so she called out to them. _ At last, you have finally come. I have been waiting for you so long, she said. Scared, Ndeye unintentionally shouted, while Moha stood still, mouth agape, making the old woman laugh. _ Come in! she said, inviting them to come inside. Although she was still afraid, Ndeye, who was having difficulty taming her feelings and sorting things out, followed her in. Unwilling to leave her alone, Moha followed her. Except that as soon as she passed the door, Ndeye, who had noticed that twelve years later everything was as she had left it, burst into tears. She went forward to take the family photo that she and her parents had taken two days before they died and held it close to her. _ You came here because you want to say goodbye to them, don't you? the lady asked Ndeye _ Yes. What happened to their bodies? Said Ndeye. _ They were buried. _ Really? Where? In which conditions? _ Isn't it enough to know that they lie in the ground in peace? You can't understand. I want to be able to say goodbye to them properly, as I should have done twelve years ago. I want to be able to definitely close the chapter of the past and fully begin a new one without this weight on my conscience. _ What a filial child! Since it is so, go to the cemetery in Pikine, you will find them. _ How? _ Their names are written on their graves. _ Thank you ..... Thank you very much. _ And don't forget this, things are not always what they seem to be. _ I will try to remember that. You have my word. _ Let's go! (To Moha who had stayed behind) _ Goodbye, he said to the lady. Happy to know that her parents had been buried, but especially where they lay, Moha could not convince Ndeye to wait until the next day to go and see them even though it was already afternoon. He had to cancel everything he had prepared for his marriage proposal to accompany her. When they arrived at the cemetery, they searched for almost an hour for the grave of Ndeye's parents, but without success. Ndeye even began to lose hope of seeing them when she remembered what the lady had said to her, and she was able to find the grave she was looking for. To her surprise, it had flowers in front of it and was clean, as if someone had come to take care of it regularly. To think that she had been worrying about it for so many years! She got down on the floor before she broke down and let out everything that was on her mind and she wanted to tell them. Watching her talk to her parents as if they were standing in front of her at heart, an idea popped into Moha's head. He walked over to Ndeye and helped her to her feet before dropping to one knee. _ I know this is surely not the place or the time, but my heart tells me otherwise. So, here, in front of your parents' grave, will you become my wife, give me a chance to help you close this chapter of your life for good so you can move on to a better future, our future, he said. _ I...You're crazy, but yes, said Ndeye.
