Chapter 17

“So let me get this straight…” Marie starts off. “Niklas never had feelings for us,” Kenna murmurs. “He was trying to make us fall in love with him,” Marie says. “So that we would let him turn us into devoutly sired vampires for his army,” Kenna continues.  “Against a Queen of all vampires, who turned him down centuries ago, so that he can be the ruler of the vampires, and then what?” Marie finishes off, asking the most important question. “He wants to make the Queen pay, it is all we know.” Evangeline answers calmly, staring warily at the two girls eating Big Macs. “But wait,” Kenna picks out an onion from her hamburger and eats it individually. “Why aren’t you all sired and stuff? He turned you.” “I was for a while,” Evangeline leans her body against the wall closest to the girls. “But then Seraphina brought me to my senses, just as she did with you, Kenna. Out of all of the vampires Niklas has turned, Seraphina was the only one who was never allured by him. Seraphina has never had the pull we have towards Niklas.” “Then why is she still loyal to him?” Casey asks this question, his arm around Dianna’s shoulder, and Evangeline gives him a sweet smile. “That is for her to tell, not me.” “That redhead is one mysterious minx.” Kamren adds on. “She hates him more than all of us and yet she refuses to tell why.” “When the time comes to tell her reasoning, she will.” Evangeline calmly states, subtly dropping the topic of the enigma that is Seraphina Beligan. “So what now?” Dianna asks, looking at the two vampires standing side by side, her head leaning against Casey’s shoulder.  “What is the next plan?” “When I had left, Seraphina told me that he will be going after the two of you. He isn’t used to rejection, not since the Queen herself has somebody fled from Niklas after being so close to his grasp.” As Evangeline says this, her yellow eyes flicker onto Marie, whose eyes are downcast towards her almost finished Big Mac. “He believes the three of you together will be the ultimate weapon against Alina and her army, and we are greatly outnumbered against the others he is bringing against us.” “Seraphina will be coming with them though, right?” Kenna asks. “We can use her as the element of surprise.” “That is precisely why she is still there instead of here with us.” Evangeline looks at the four humans sitting beside one another in front of her, and she announces to them what could be their downfall. “He will be using Elizabeth’s transformation to his advantage, to grab you all when you least expect it, but your friend is gone and I need you all to remember that.” “There isn’t a chance that we-” Interrupting Marie, Kamren snaps. “No. Niklas killed your friend when he sired her to him; she wouldn’t hesitate to kill you all if Niklas told her to.” “If we kill him?” Dianna’s voice holds a hardness none of her friends are used to hearing from her, but Kamren’s lips curl into a prideful gleam. “That’s the plan.” “With him dead, the sire bonds he has with all of those girls will break.” Evangeline adds on. “Killing him would stop his attack against the Queen and save all of those girls’ lives.” “Then start training us.” Marie stands up to her feet, her mouth filled with the remains of her Big Mac, and she speaks whilst chewing food. “Make me strong enough to kill him.” This time, rather than Kamren smirking proudly, Evangeline does. “While our weak spot is Elizabeth, his is you, Marie.” Evangeline approaches the beautiful brunette that stands in front of her, circling the equally petite human who is still only in Niklas’s shirt. “Seraphina got to Kenna before Kenna could even spare a lasting glance at Niklas, but you had spent time with him, you had a connection that normally sends all of us into his trap, and still you had managed to flee from him.”             “How?” Kamren asks, his eyes staring up and down Marie’s frame from a distance as Evangeline continues to circle around her.             “I made a choice,” Marie murmurs. “I knew when I heard Dianna scream that it was her or him, to either give into my darkness or to remind myself of the goodness I have within me by saving my friend. Chicks before d***s, I guess.”             “That pissed him off, huh?” Dianna has a proud smirk on her face after hearing this, and Evangeline nods her head.             “He has a price for your head, Miss. Lynch.” Evangeline coolly responds. “Seraphina informed me that Niklas’s main goal will be Marie and Kenna, Marie in particular, but he also intends to kill you.”             “Over my dead body.” Both Kamren and Casey mutter simultaneously and Dianna’s smirk only grows larger.             “When do you think he will realize where we are?” Dianna asks and Evangeline grimaces.             “He already has, the only thing he is waiting for his is for Elizabeth to finish her transition into a vampire.” Evangeline focuses momentarily on Dianna. “I suspect that we have an hour, maybe two, before he is here.”             Clapping almost joyously, Kamren grins. “Then, let’s get practicing, shall we?!” Kamren looks at the two girls who they are all fighting to keep out of Niklas’s grasp and asks them. “How well do you two know how to fight?”             Immediately, Casey and Dianna snort in amusement, while both Kenna and Marie turn deathly silent.             “Do you two know how to fight at all?” Evangeline asks, surprise showing in the widening of her yellow eyes, and Kenna forcefully smiles.             “I did kill Juliet.”             “You killed her with the element of surprise, which you won’t be able to use this time, genius.” Dianna slyly remarks.             “You have got to be kidding me.” Kamren grumbles and Kenna glares at the vampire.             “Hey! You try living in a town safer than Sesame Street and see how well you can fight!”             “I was a track runner in-” Marie begins to say before Kamren interrupts her, yet again.             “We vampires are faster than lightning.”             “Will you ever stop interrupting-” Marie grumbles, only to be interrupted by him yet again with a large grin on his face.             “Nope.” Kamren looks over at Evangeline, not paying the angered Marie any more attention, and he orders. “Ask Seraphina how many are coming.”             “Before I left, she said Niklas is bringing twenty girls.”             “That’s not too bad, right?” Casey weakly asks, a hopeful yet goofy lopsided grin on his face. “Six against twenty?”             “Two damsels, one former human cop, an injured slayer, and two vampires against twenty trained vampires….does that sound promising to you, human?” Kamren sarcastically retorts.             “We also have Seraphina…” Casey grumbles and Kamren theatrically throws his arms up in the air.             “Well that makes it all okay then, doesn’t it! Seven against nineteen!”             “You said I could distract Niklas though, right?” Marie silences Kamren and Casey’s bantering with her question, bringing all of the focus onto her.             “Yes, you are his main focus other than Kenna.” Evangeline nods her head.             “And he will not kill Kenna or me, right?” Marie asks.             “Yes.” Evangeline answers.             Marie turns her attention onto Kenna. “Do you still have that blade with you that you killed Juliet with?” Kenna pulls out the curved knife and Marie grins, looking once more back at Evangeline. “How good of a fighter is Seraphina?”             “The best I’ve seen other than the Royals and Niklas.” Evangeline retorts and the puzzle pieces begin to fit in Marie’s head.             “Then I have a plan.”
