The Shadow in the Trees

262 Words
Nightfall wrapped the island in an eerie darkness, and the only light came from the pale shimmer of the moon. Farida and Muhammad huddled close together by the stream, their small fire crackling weakly against the growing cold. Suddenly, a low rustling echoed through the trees once again. Muhammad stood up, his body tense, shielding Farida instinctively. “Who’s there?” he called out into the darkness. There was no response only silence... then a faint whisper, carried by the wind. Farida’s heart pounded loudly in her chest. She clutched Muhammad’s arm tighter, drawing strength from his steady presence. “Maybe it’s just the wind,” she whispered, though she didn’t quite believe it herself. Out of the shadows, a figure appeared. Cloaked in leaves and dirt, it looked almost part of the forest itself. Muhammad quickly grabbed a thick branch for defense. The figure, however, raised empty hands in peace. “I mean no harm,” the stranger said, his voice raspy. “I am Malik... and you are not the first to be trapped here.” Farida and Muhammad exchanged a wary glance. “How did you survive?” Muhammad asked cautiously. Malik smiled sadly. “Survival is not the hard part. Escaping... that is where the true challenge lies.” As Malik spoke, Farida noticed strange tattoos on his arms ancient symbols she didn’t recognize. And the more she listened, the more she realized: this island held secrets far deeper and darker than they had ever imagined. Their journey had just begun and the real adventure was only starting.
